Jennings Release....Surprised? I'm Not.

It was reported the Vikings organization ask Jennings to restructure his contract, but the two sides couldn't agree, so Jennings was released. Right now, it seems like the Vikings saved 5 million. If it's a June 1 designation, it 4 more million dollars saved. He is 32, good not great production, and a 11 million cap hit. Fans are surprised and disappointed, I'm not. When the news broke of Wallace heading to the Vikings, I immediately went to spotrac to check his salary. Seeing his 12 million cap hit, logical questions arise. Will Wallace restructure his contract? If not, then who else restructures their contract, mainly Jennings, Greenway, and Peterson (maybe Robison). If Vikings want to keep Peterson, can't restructure his contract. So the next players in line are Greenway and Jennings. Zimmer already expressed his praise for Greenway, so he seemed like the last person they will ask to restructure his contract. Also, Greenway is more willing to restructure as oppose to Jennings. Charles Johnson is considered our starting #1 WR. Wallace would be considered #2 WR. Jarius Wright is a cheaper WR who is excelling at the slot position, and sometimes as wide out. The organization is somewhat banking on Patterson working hard this off-season to become an elite WR. Is there really any room for wide out who is 32 yrs old, 11 million cap hit, and is just a security blanket. Several "analyst" has stated Jennings has looked his dominate self in a while, and both sides couldn't reach an agreement. Jennings wisdom and security blanket to Teddy is the good reasons into keeping Jennings. Our wide receiving is now:

WR1 - Johnson

WR2- Wallace

WR3 - Wright

WR4 - Patterson

WR5 - Thielen

TE - Rudolph

If Johnson and Wallace is considered #1 and #2 receiver with Wright playing in the slot, is there truly room for Jennings. This situation is somewhat similar to what happened to Jennings in Green Bay. After getting Cobb and another emerging receiver, there was really no room for Jennings. Logically and business wise, this release made sense. Yes the Vikings could have release Greenway first, but there is still time for that and this move is what the Vikings decided. Freeing up the cap space can give Spielman the opportunity to sign Harrison Smith to a contract extension. And the Vikings can also sign another WR in free agency or a freakish WR in the draft, mid-late round.
