We've gotten to the 28th overall pick in our 2015 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, and the Denver Broncos are now on the clock. SpencerN was running the show for the Broncos for this selection, and with things seemingly pretty well set on the offensive side of the ball in the Mile High City. . .well, for at least one more year with Peyton Manning at the controls. . .he turned to the defensive side of the ball and found himself a project.
With the 28th pick in the 2015 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, the Denver Broncos select. . .
Arik Armstead, defensive tackle, University of Oregon
Here's what SpencerN had to say about the selection.
If Denver is looking to go best player available, Arik Armstead is the pick
If Denver is looking to fill a need, Arik Armstead is the pick.
The board fell nicely for the Broncos, allowing them to grab one of the best defensive lineman in the draft. Armstead mostly played on the inside at Oregon, but he'll probably be used on the edge for Wade Phillips. Arik will fit nicely in the rotation with Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson and Antonio Smith; all of whom are set to be free agents in 2016.
Denver could have also gone with ILB Eric Kendricks, OT Cedric Ogbuehi or OT Jake Fisher. However, Armstead showed too much value to ignore at pick 28.
My Thoughts
At 6'7" and 290 pounds, Armstead has the kind of physical traits that make scouts and coaches drool. He could have a pretty bright future ahead of him as either a 4-3 defensive tackle or a 3-4 defensive end, though his best fit would seem to be as the latter (while keeping the ability to potentially slide inside in passing situations). There were complaints that his motor doesn't seem to run all of the time, but if whoever drafts him can correct that at the next level and harness his athletic ability, they could have someone that could be a very good defensive lineman in this league for a long time.
What do you think of this selection, folks?
