Why Waynes was the right choice

I think we've all been a little disappointed with our first round pick's performance this preseason. Thankfully we have a second round pick playing like a first so it eases the pain a bit. But I would just like to outline why I think that Trae Waynes was the best pick for this team. And I should note that I was wanting Marcus Peters or Davante Parker on draft day so this is me eating some crow.

First off, by all accounts Trae is a model citizen. In today's NFL where every other day sees another player suspended this is key. We simply don't need that type of player on the team and Zimmer certainly does not want the distraction.

Then there's the ceiling. Waynes has the right physical traits to be an absolute stud. And he appears to be a quick learner who is very coachable. It just so happens that we have a DB whisperer on the sidelines and a solid veteran on the roster (who probably won't be after this year). So it was well worth it to take someone with tremendous upside, even if we won't see it for a year or two.

That leads me to my biggest point. As excited as we are about the 2015 MN Vikes, I think we can all agree that our best years are yet to come. With such a young, talented team we could be very, very good for a very, very long time. We aren't in a go all in to win now scenario. Every season we see rookie wide receivers tearing up the league. You don't usually see rookie CBs doing as well. It is the toughest position to transition to in the NFL. It takes awhile. In a year or two or five we should have 2 beasts at CB and it will be much, much easier to find an excellent WR on short notice than a DB.

Waynes got the ideal landing spot with a fantastic coach and no rush to put him in the game with Newman along this season. We can take full advantage of his upside in the years to come and we won't have to worry about him getting into trouble. Getting Parker would have been incredible fun, but I believe that Waynes was the right pick for this team at this time.
