Offseason math

I've mapped out offseason needs & finances for the Vikings through 2019 in a spreadsheet, and I find some interesting notes... Because any cap space can roll over year to year, some smart cap management in 2016 can give us a four-year window, through 2019, to put together a dominant team even when it comes time to pay Teddy. (in 2019) It would fall apart a bit in 2020, and even in 2019 we would lose Everson Griffen and Linval Joseph, but by then we should have replacements available.

  • I've assumed that after the WR1 that I want to draft in 2016, we won't have any rookies starting year 1, which I think is a good thing for a team that intends to contend for the super bowl. That means we will have a lot of depth throughout the window. (until 2020)
  • I've also assumed that Loadholt will retire this year and we'll need to replace him in free agency. Thankfully there are potentially a number of options that may be available for similar money. I've made sure we keep Berger and have other backup guards in case John Sullivan is also done playing or significantly limited.
  • If we draft a WR in 2016, there isn't really roster space for Mike Wallace, even at a reduced salary, unless we cut someone like Charles Johnson or Adam Thielen. I think CJ at his minimum salary is a much better value than Wallace at even just a couple million a year, so I've been assuming we'll cut Wallace.
  • If we keep AP in 2016, we're sort of forced to cut/trade him in 2017 anyway or we go into cap hell as early as 2017, and we're sort of forced to keep Kalil or find a LT we can get for under $6m in 2016.
  • If we trade AP for a 2nd round pick this year and use that to draft a bigger "Thunder" RB to compliment McKinnon in the 2nd or 3rd, that frees up enough money that we could sign Cordy Glenn for $10m/yr, Kelvin Beachum for $7.5m/yr, and still have enough to re-sign Harris at $4m/yr. That would be a deep, versatile, and much higher performing OLine than we have today, and it wouldn't kill our cap management.
