Redskins Cut Frost, Mason, 20 Others

Sports Network | August 30, 2008

Ashburn, VA (Sports Network) - Punter Derrick Frost and NFL preseason rushing leader Marcus Mason were among the highest-profile players released by the Washington Redskins on Saturday, as Jim Zorn's club reduced its roster to the 53-man maximum. Frost appeared in 49 games as a member of the Redskins over the past three seasons, but lost his job in the preseason to Durant Books, a sixth-round Draft choice out of Georgia Tech. Frost's preseason punting avg. (45.5) was nearly three yards better than that of Brooks (42.8), but the rookie's net punting average was higher. Mason, meanwhile, couldn't secure a spot on the active roster despite leading all NFL players with 317 rushing yards during the 2008 preseason. Mason, whose numbers benefited from the extra exhibition game that the Redskins played, was a first-round free agent out of Youngstown State. Also released on Saturday were defensive tackle Matthias Askew, defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti, fullback Nehemiah Broughton, tackle Devin Clark, guard Andrew Crummey, quarterback Derek Devine, wide receiver Horace Gant, linebacker Curtis Gatewood, safety Patrick Ghee, linebacker David Holloway, cornerback Cedrick Holt, wide receiver Maurice Mann, guard Fred Matua, wide receiver Billy McMullen, wide receiver wide receiver Anthony Mix, cornerback Matterral Richardson, tackle Todd Wade, linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler, tackle Tavares Washington, and cornerback Byron Westbrook. Among the notables in that group are Boschetti, who played 19 games with Washington from 2004 through 2007; Wade, a 10-game starter with the Redskins last season, and Westbrook, the brother of Eagles Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook. The Redskins will open their season this Thursday at the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.
