Giants Release Woodson, place Wright on IR, sign Carney

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants appear set to go into the 2008 season with two quarterbacks, as Anthony Wright and Andre' Woodson were both part of the team's "cut-down day" transactions on Saturday. Also, at least for a time, the team will carry two kickers, as veteran John Carney was signed to fill in for the ailing Lawrence Tynes. Wright, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve, was limited by a neck injury during the preseason. Wright, who appeared in four games as a reserve with the Giants last year, had just a 63.3 passer rating during the 2008 warm-up period. A tad more surprising than that move was the release of the rookie Woodson, a sixth-round Draft choice who was a highly decorated player at the University of Kentucky. Woodson, who could re-appear as a member of the Giants' practice squad, was 3-of-9 for 41 yards with an interception in the preseason. The 44-year-old Carney will be on the roster indefinitely, with Tynes still sidelined by a knee injury suffered during training camp. Fifth on the all- time NFL scoring list, the veteran saw time with both the Jaguars and Chiefs last season. In addition to Wright, tackle Guy Whimper (broken foot) and rookie center Digger Bujnoch (sprained knee) were also placed on season-ending injured reserve. Others released or waived by the team on Saturday were offensive lineman Andrew Bain, defensive back Darren Barnett, tight end Eric Butler, defensive tackle Jeremy Clark, tight end Jerome Collins, linebacker Tank Daniels, fullback Robert Douglas, defensive end Wallace Gilberry, offensive lineman Na'Shan Goddard, kicker Josh Huston, wide receiver Brandon London, offensive lineman Clifford Louis, wide receiver Marcus Monk, defensive end Alex Morrow, defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo, defensive back Geoffrey Pope, offensive lineman Kurt Quarterman, safety Stuart Schweigert and linebacker James Terry. Notables in that group include Daniels and Douglas, both of whom spent time on the team's active roster last season, and Schweigert, who started 42 games with the Raiders from 2004 through 2007. The Giants will open their season this Thursday, when they host the NFC East rival Washington Redskins in a primetime affair.
