Yes, I've Finally Found a Reason

I don't need an excuse.

Apparently we've discovered the reason why it doesn't appear as though Tarvaris Jackson could hit Roseanne on a five-yard hitch.

Adding injury to insult, the Vikings revealed today that QB Tarvaris Jackson has an avulsion fracture of the index finger on his right hand, suffered midway through yesterday's 24-14 loss at Dallas.

According to the orthopedic link that Access Vikings linked to, an avulsion fracture is defined as an injury to the bone in a place where a tendon or ligament attaches to the bone. When an avulsion fracture occurs, the tendon or ligament pulls off a piece of the bone.

Now, yours truly loves a good conspiracy theory as much as anybody.  So, because this has come out since Jackson's abysmal performance against Dallas yesterday, I find that I'm asking myself one question:

Is this a broken finger. . .or a "slap, slap, grin, grin, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more" broken finger?

Honestly, the timing on this seems to be way, WAY too convenient.  Quarterback goes up against the undisputed best team in the conference, gets solid defensive support, gets a solid running game, and urinates the game down one of his lower extremities, looking absolutely terrible in the process.  Said quarterback couldn't throw an accurate pass downfield to save his life, and only completes two passes to wide receivers all day long.  Now, after this awful performance, it comes out that. . .hey, guess what?  His finger is broken!

Please.  If he broke the finger during the game yesterday and it was affecting his throwing, then why the heck was he still on the field?  I don't want to hear "he's a competitor" or "he was trying to be a leader" or any of the other cliches, either.  Playing hurt is one thing. . .playing when such a state adversely affects your team is another.

So I'm not entirely buying into the "Jackson is hurt" theory yet.  I know that since the end of last season, Brad Childress has been trumpeting the virtues of Tarvaris Jackson and telling us all how he was such a quick study and how ready he was, even telling us that he was ahead of where Donovan McNabb was at the same point of his career.  In McNabb's second year (his first full year as a starter), the Eagles went 11-5 and made it to their first of four consecutive NFC Championship Games.  In Jackson's second year (his first full year as a starter), he's leading a pass offense that's as bad as any in the history of the Minnesota Vikings.

Methinks that Brad Childress misjudged this one.  I also think that this is just the sort of excuse that Childress needed to create to sit his pet project back on the bench.  What, exactly, makes me think this?

It's something I touched on a bit when it started coming out that Michael Vick's co-defendants were starting to take plea deals to testify against him.  Yes, Brad Childress has been loyal to Tarvaris Jackson, possibly to a fault.  But there's one thing that can completely override loyalty, and that's the basic human desire to save one's own ass.  Brad Childress knows that his butt is on the line as the Vikings' coach.  He's hitched his wagon to #7, and it looks like that wagon has an Oregon Trail-style broken wheel at this point.  If the Vikings continue along this trail, there's a good chance that there won't be a Year 3 of the Brad Childress Era.

(Yes, I know that Zygi gave him a vote of confidence.  I'm sure that Billy Martin got lots of votes of confidence from George Steinbrenner, too.  See how well that worked out?)

While Childress might think that his best chance to win for the future lies with Tarvaris Jackson (which, as of now, looks like a dubious conclusion at best), he probably knows in the back of his mind that his best chance to win NOW is with. . .well, pretty much anybody else.  A 4-12 season, which is about what the Vikings are looking at right now, isn't going to get the job done for an owner and a team looking for a new stadium and a concrete identity.  Brad Childress knows this. . .he has to.

We'll see how this progresses.  Next weekend's game is at the Metrodome against Childress' old employer, the Philadelphia Eagles.  I have a funny feeling that we're not going to be seeing Tarvaris Jackson behind center when the game starts.  Depending on how this game goes, we might not see him behind center again any time soon. . .if ever.

I Wonder....
Think Philly will be ready to trade McNabb at the end of the year???  Hmmmm.....  I wonder what it would take to get him.
This post would be better if I wasn't screwed by the refs!

Maybe the problem is childress
If Jackson wasn't playing in one of the worst-planned offenses I've ever seen, do you think he'd have shown better development?

Jeff George anyone?
OK, not really, but only because we need a long-term fix. Too bad we can't get Kellen Clemens from the Jets. I wonder if Chillmiss would have drafted him instead of TJack had he still been available.

Bill Cohwer next year?

QB Situation
Agree with much of the sentiment on T-Jack. We've seen enough to know it's not going to happen. When you compare his first 7 game stats with just about anyone .. they don't compare. McNabb, Manning, S. Young, Aikman ... all their first 7 game stats were bad, but not nearly as bad as T-Jack. He's in Ryan Leaf territory.

But don't draft a QB. Sign one. Get a Jake Delhomme-type. Draft bulk, sign skill. That's the way to go. If the D can stay together, this is a team that can compete in a weak NFC in 2009. But they need just a league-average QB.

don't understand all the confusion...
why are there still people on the TJ bandwagon?...how more obvious should it be that this was a mistake?....I've watched football for decades, and seen dozens of new quarterbacks go through their growing pains...the difference between most of them, and Jackson, is that along with the bad throws and mistakes, there was also some BRILLIANCE shown on occasion...Jackson has yet to show me ANYTHING close to brilliance...

How about Derek Anderson?....he's basically keeping the seat warm for Brady Quinn, and the guy is a player....

I hate the Bears, laugh at the Lions, and wipe my butt with a Packers towel.

Going for the draft pick
Chilly is too stubborn to give up on T-Jack just yet. If he's healthy, he's the guy. I mean, for real, Kelly Holcomb? We've already seen that he's not going to give the Vikings a better chance of winning this season. And don't even try to bring up Brooks Bollinger, he'd suck even worse (if that's possible).  As for this season, T-Jack will not help our offense unless Childress starts playing to his strengths - or at least play away from his glaring weakness: accuracy.  Quit with the west coast offense that focuses on short, accurate passes and go with a power run offense that focuses on the best running back tandem in the league.

As for next season, draft a QB in the first round. This draft class is littered with good QBs - take one.  Doesn't matter who it is, they'll be 100% better than any QB we've got on the roster now.  Get a few good WRs while you're at it too. Now we don't want to put all our eggs in one basket with this rookie QB, so we'll need a veteran for him to take a year (or 2) to study behind. Pick up an average veteran QB that will play 1-2 years for the Vikes and lead the way for the QB we get in the first round.  We could even keep Tarvaris around for the 3rd string QB (if he's still in the NFL after this year).

Something needs to be done about the QB situation, but I don't see it changing much for the rest of this season. We can only hope that T-Jack actually improves and shows us that talent that Chilly sees in him.

Rookie+ No receivers+ Bad Coach = Awful
I'm still on the "we still don't know" ride with T-Jack.  We probably won't ever know and he'll probably go down as a failure of a QB.  But having this guy in Childress's system that no one can seem to figure out, with a #1 receiver of Bobby Wade and you really can't expect too much out of him.

I'm not apologizing for him, I just don't think there are many QBs who could find success in the Childress environment.  I'm sure Peyton Manning or Tom Brady could find a way to take it over, but no one else.  After the way he treated Marcus Robinson, it just doesn't seem like anyone likes playing for him or wants to really learn his plays.  In addition, free agents won't go near him.

Also, Kelly Holcomb sucks too.

Well I Hope We Do
I mean we should be having Jackson still play because who knows maybe he can surprise everyone and have a good game. (I doubt this will happen)But who else do we have at qb that can change the team into a contender for the division? Kelly Holcomb is an old veteran that is way past his prime and can never make this team great. The only thing and best thing we should do is let Jackson suck it up and maybe hopefully he can do great (don't count on it) and gain some experience. If he does bad this for the rest of the year then we will have a high draft pick which can draft one of the better qb's in the draft that can throw.
