Around SBN: Tom Brady And The Confusing Pantheon Of QB Greatness

2007 NFL Draft Open Thread

Okay, folks, here's the plan for the draft today.

I'm going to be live blogging the first day of the draft.  That's right. . .the Hank's Premium Soda will be cold, the chips and salsa will be fresh, the (potential) pizza will be hot and delicious, and my butt will be parked in front of this computer.

All.  Day.  Long.

But I want YOU guys to contribute, too!  Whether it be through comments in this thread, or diaries, or whatever else.  Let's have some fun with this here draft thing, folks. . .it's the last big football event we're going to have for a few months.

The results from our last pre-draft poll for who you hope the Vikings take at #7. . .with 141 precincts reporting:

Adrian Peterson - 48% (68 votes)
LaRon Landry - 16% (23 votes)
Brady Quinn - 14% (20 votes)
Gaines Adams - 9% (13 votes)
Amobi Okoye - 4% (6 votes)
Leon Hall - 2% (4 votes)
Patrick Willis - 2% (3 votes)
Jamaal Anderson - 1% (2 votes)
Levi Brown - 0% (1 vote)
Other - 0% (1 vote)  (No explanation given)

The consensus top 2 choices are the same as my top 2 choices.  Sounds good to me!

We're still about 11 hours away or so. . .so wake up refreshed and ready to go, folks!

Update [2007-4-28 11:41:51 by Gonzo]:

Here are the other SBNation sites that will be live blogging today, too.

Cincy Jungle
Pride of Detroit
Mile High Report
The Falcoholic
Niners Nation
Stampede Blue

Less than 20 minutes to go!

Update [2007-4-28 11:49:8 by Gonzo]:

That reaction that Brady Quinn got when he was introduced? That's what I'll be doing if he ends up going to Minnesota.

Update [2007-4-28 11:51:38 by Gonzo]:

Michael Vick dressed all in white? Must. . .not. . .make. . .obvious. . .joke. . .

Update [2007-4-28 12:21:52 by Gonzo]:

The Raiders are, officially, on the clock!

Update [2007-4-28 12:21:52 by Gonzo]:

The Raiders apparently asked Cleveland for their first, second, and third round picks this year AND their first rounder next year for Cleveland to move up from 3 to 1. Al Davis might be legally insane.

Update [2007-4-28 12:21:52 by Gonzo]:

When did Steve Young get Leonard Nimoy's "Spock" ears, exactly?

Update [2007-4-28 12:21:52 by Gonzo]:

The Raiders take. . .JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU.

I'm almost disappointed. . .Crazy Al actually made the safe pick here. But man, it would have been fun if he had taken Calvin Johnson.

Update [2007-4-28 13:4:33 by Gonzo]:

The Lions take. . .Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech.

Well, I had him going at 2, but I had Tampa moving up to take him. There's a pretty good chance that Johnson is still going to get dealt to either Tampa or Atlanta, but if the Lions keep him, I don't want him kicking our asses for the next 10 years.

Update [2007-4-28 13:4:33 by Gonzo]:

NFLN reporting that the Lions didn't take Johnson with the intention of trading him, and that they might be sending Mike Williams to Tennessee for a second-day pick.

So Calvin Johnson IS going to be kicking our asses twice a year for the next decade. Lovely.

Update [2007-4-28 13:4:33 by Gonzo]:

Cleveland selects. . .Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin.

Can't say I saw this one coming, to be honest. Thomas is a pretty damn good player, but I really thought they'd take Quinn here.

And, with that pick, Quinn Watch is officially on.

Update [2007-4-28 13:4:33 by Gonzo]:

Tampa Bay selects. . .Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson.

Quinn Watch continues. Adams isn't a bad pick. . .he's a little small and doesn't do much against the run, but he's probably the best pass rusher in the draft.

Minnesota will be on the clock in, at the latest, half an hour.

Update [2007-4-28 13:4:33 by Gonzo]:

Arizona has an interesting pick coming up here. Do they take Adrian Peterson, despite having Edge James? Do they take LaRon Landry? Do they reach for Levi Brown?

Sadly, they won't take Brady Quinn.

Update [2007-4-28 13:4:33 by Gonzo]:

Arizona selects. . .Levi Brown, OT, Penn State.

Yep, it's a reach. . .but Arizona needs OL THAT badly. They probably could have moved down a few spots and gotten better value for him.

So either Adrian Peterson or LaRon Landry is guaranteed to be there when Minnesota makes their pick. . .which is coming up right after the Redskins make their selection. Do they go Landry? Do they take Okoye? Does Miami trade up to #6? We shall see.

Update [2007-4-28 13:40:37 by Gonzo]:

Washington takes. . .LaRon Landry, S, Louisiana State.

Well, this makes me sad. . .I was hoping that Landry would get to Minnesota. He's still going to turn out to be the best defensive player in this draft, IMO, but it won't be for Minnesota.

And the Vikings are ON THE CLOCK!!!! Please. . .if there is a higher power out there, they won't take Brady Quinn.

Prepare for the requisite "will they get the card in on time" jokes. Another good reason to watch NFLN instead of ESPN.

Update [2007-4-28 13:40:37 by Gonzo]:

Vikings taking their time. Mayock saying that the Vikes should take a corner here. I wonder if he saw our pass rush last season. . .nobody else saw it, that's for damn sure.

Update [2007-4-28 13:40:37 by Gonzo]:

Minnesota selects. . .Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma

Great pick. . .we've been over it and over it, but this is an awesome selection for the Vikings. We'll get more into the Vikings picks post-draft.

And the best part about this pick? It's not Brady Quinn.

Update [2007-4-28 13:40:37 by Gonzo]:

Atlanta selects. . .Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas.

Interesting. . .I thought that the Bobby Petrino factor might have pushed this pick to Amobi Okoye, but it didn't. Anderson should immediately provide help for them, but Atlanta's gotta be pissed that Landry wasn't there.

Oh. . .and Quinn Watch comically continues. And NFLN is saying that he's not necessarily a lock to go at #9 to Miami, either.

Update [2007-4-28 13:54:56 by Gonzo]:

Miami selects. . .Ted Ginn, Jr., WR, Ohio State

Holy reach, Batman. I. . .frankly, I'm stunned. I just don't get it.

But this means that Quinn watch continues.

Oh, and I've foregone the "new page" thing. . .even though this post is going to be massive. I might start a second post here in a bit.

Update [2007-4-28 14:32:43 by Gonzo]:

Houston selects. . .Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville

Very good pick for the Texans here. I love me some Okoye. . .I'm surprised he fell as far as he did.

San Francisco up next. . .you'd almost have to think they'd go Patrick Willis here.

Update [2007-4-28 14:32:43 by Gonzo]:

Roger Goodell has apparently invited Brady Quinn into HIS green room (where there are no cameras). . .presumably to keep us from seeing him cry on national television.

Christ, suck it up and take it like a man. Another reason I'm happy we passed on that schlub.

Update [2007-4-28 14:32:43 by Gonzo]:

The 49ers select. . .Patrick Willis, LB, Mississippi

Great pick by the Niners here. Fooch has gotta be pretty happy with this.

I've decided that we're going through Pick 16 with this thread, and then we'll start a new post for comments for the second half of the first round.

Update [2007-4-28 14:32:43 by Gonzo]:

The Bills select. . .Marshawn Lynch, RB, California

Good pick for the Bills here, too. . .with the exception of the Ginn selection, there really hasn't been a bad pick in the first round to this point. You could argue Levi Brown, but I think he fills a need for the Cardinals.

Plus, Lynch being selected by Buffalo means that he doesn't get selected by Green Bay. This makes me a happy camper.

St. Louis is on the clock now. . .is this where the Quinn Watch comes to an end? (I hope not, because this is hilarious.)

Update [2007-4-28 15:15:5 by Gonzo]:

St. Louis selects. . .Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska

So, St. Louis doesn't take Quinn. Carriker is a BIG guy (nearly 300 pounds). . .similar to Kevin Williams when he came out. I wonder if Carriker won't eventually have to move inside like Williams did.

Carolina up now. I really, REALLY can't see Quinn falling past here.

Update [2007-4-28 15:15:5 by Gonzo]:

We have our first trade! The Jets have been put on the clock.

Update [2007-4-28 15:15:5 by Gonzo]:

Carolina sends their #1 (14th) and #6 to the Jets for New York's #1 (25th), #2 (59th), and #5

Update [2007-4-28 15:15:5 by Gonzo]:

New York (A) (from Carolina) selects. . .Derrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh.

Pretty good pick for the Jets, who needed corners anyway, what with all the WRs the Patriots have added this off-season.

Pittsburgh and Green Bay will round out the top half of Round 1

Update [2007-4-28 15:15:5 by Gonzo]:

Pittsburgh selects. . .Laurence Timmons, OLB, Florida State

A bit high for Timmons, IMO. . .I think they would have been better served taking Leon Hall. Timmons is a good player and everything, but I thought that CB was a bigger need for them.

Green Bay's will now select their next monumental bust.

Update [2007-4-28 15:15:5 by Gonzo]:

Green Bay selects. . .Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. . .Harrell ahead of Branch. Not a WR, not a S, not a position they need help at.

Nobody was scared of Green Bay before. . .they're sure as hell not scared of them now.

That's it for this post. . .the second half of the first round will get a new post momentarily.

Seriously
Before I go to work (all damn day) I really hope that this works out for us.  I'm leaning towards us drafting Gaines Adams or that other DE (Anderson, I think?) but I spose I wouldn't be too upset with AP (even though I think he's a bigger injury risk than Mewelde Moore.)

Those are my two cents.  Have fun, everybody, and GO VIKINGS!

Quinn & Peterson
Wow . . . now it seems like there's a decent chance that both Quinn and Peterson will fall to the Vikings.

That said, do they trade out? Say, to the middle of the first round?

As cool as it would be to have AP, I can just as easily see them taking a guy like Kenny Irons or Lorenzo Booker later on, trading down to a spot where a WR will be good value, and getting at least one extra pick besides, as opposed to taking the "best player available" at a position that isn't a glaring need.

Let's see what happens. Short of Calvin Johnson falling to #7, I like the way this is turning out so far.

Trade Down?
Can they get a 2nd pick from Miami or Buffalo?

by the Dragon on Apr 28, 2007 12:00 PM CDT reply actions

Peterson
Fantastic. I like this RB tandem a lot. Wonder who the goal-line guy is; Chester Taylor was kind of mediocre in that role last year -- and will AP's injury risk preclude him from that job?

I'm thrilled that they passed on Quinn as well but I wouldn't have minded if they traded the #7 pick to someone who wanted him.

Quinn watch continues!
Miami just makes a Troy Williamson-style reach . . .

The Fall
Gonzo, how much farther do you think Quinn will fall?

by PalindromeBob on Apr 28, 2007 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

I can't see him going
Until #12 to Buffalo at the earliest. . .or #13 to St. Louis.

At the latest, I think he goes to Carolina at #14.

ROFLS
Wonder if Ginn will need to go see an eye doctor to help him catch balls too.

Green Bay's pick
I think, however, this makes Greg Olsen the top pick for Green Bay unless Carolina picks him off first . . .

Still, I like the idea of GB missing out on the consensus top 2 RBs when that's a clear position of need for them.

ESPN thinks that Lynch was "overdrafted for need." Fine with me; nice to see another team get that accusation.

Injury prone
AP will be out for the season after very few touches.  He is not NFL durable.  I'm very disappointed.  We needed NEEDED a pass rusher, and AP will suck.  It's a shame.

by NMUSpidey on Apr 28, 2007 6:29 PM CDT reply actions

With all due respect, NMU
We also needed offensive playmakers.

And we've gotten two pretty damn good ones in the first two rounds.
