Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

A Pat on the Back

Well, as speculated earlier, the Patriot that the Vikings wanted to claim was, indeed, TE Garrett Mills.  The Vikings were awarded Mills a short time ago, according to Access Vikings.  No word yet on who was cut to bring Mills into the fold.

Mills was the Patriots' fourth-round pick in the 2006 Draft out of the University of Tulsa.  He didn't see any action for the Patriots last year and was placed on IR with a thigh injury during the season.  As a senior at Tulsa in 2005, he set an NCAA record for receiving yardage for a tight end in a single season, amassing a whopping 1,235 yards on 87 catches.

(By comparison, Greg Olson. . .who was drafted by Chicago in the most recent draft and is allegedly going to revolutionize the tight end position despite the fact that he blocks like a scared little girl. . .had 87 receptions for 1,215 yards in his entire college career.)

Some of the players that the Vikings cut yesterday have been claimed by other teams.  Tyler Thigpen was claimed. . .not by Philadelphia as originally thought, but rather by the Kansas City Chiefs.  The Chiefs only had two quarterbacks on their roster (starter Damon Huard and backup Brodie Croyle), so they had room to bring Thigpen in.

Kansas City also claimed DE Khreem Smith, while CB Devonte Edwards was claimed by the New York Football Giants.  LB David Herron was also claimed, but Access Vikings hasn't divulged who he was claimed by yet.

DT Conrad Bolston, CB Chad Johnson, and OG Seppo Evwaraye comprise the Vikings' practice squad to this point.  The Vikes will be able to have nine players on their practice squad this season instead of the usual eight because they have an exception for Seppo.  No word on whether Groucho, Harpo, and/or Chico has been granted the same exception.

More news as things develop.

Update [2007-9-2 23:24:36 by Gonzo]:

The player that was cut to bring in Garrett Mills was OG Brian Daniels.
