Open Thread, Vikings at Redskins

Minnesota Vikings at Washington Redskins
FedEx Field
Washington, District of Columbia

Good morning.

In less than eleven hours, fans from Minnesota will join others from around the world. And they will be watching our team launch the largest football battle in the history of mankind.

"Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the the first Monday Night of the football season, and our team will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist.

And should we win the day, the first Monday Night game of 2006 will no longer be known as simply a game, but as the day Viking fans declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight!" We're going to live on! We're going to survive!

Today we celebrate our Opening Day!

(Yeah, it's lame. Yet at the same time, it also rules.)

Looking at tonight's game, I think that one thing is key. . .as does Pat Kirwan of NFL.com.

This game should be a low-scoring event. Sometime during the second half, we all are going to forget that the Vikings staff is inexperienced and at a distinct disadvantage. I have a feeling Minnesota will squeak by with a Ryan Longwell field goal late in the game. Washington is a legitimate playoff contender this season, but until Portis is 100 percent and the rest of the offense gets it right, it will struggle. No one understands the talent the Vikings have on both of their lines, but they will have a deeper appreciation of the Minnesota guys with their hand on the ground after Monday night.

He's exactly right. I think there are very few people in the NFL that realize how talented the Vikings offensive line and defensive line are.

From the various Redskins sources I've read around the internet, there's NOBODY in the D.C. area that realizes how talented the Vikings offensive line and defensive line are.

And those are the boys that are going to carry Minnesota to a victory tonight.

Gonzo's Final Score Prediction: Vikings 20, Redskins 17

Have at it, folks!
