As reported earlier, Visanthe Shiancoe was one of two free agents the Minnesota Vikings signed this afternoon.
After being drafted in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Morgan State University (located in Baltimore, Maryland), Shiancoe spent his first four NFL seasons with the New York Giants. At this point of his career, he's more well-known for his prowess as a blocker than his receiving abilities. To this point, he has amassed only 35 catches for 253 yards and 3 TDs in his NFL career. Part of this might be a function of playing behind Jeremy Shockey in New York, and there's a chance that his receiving abilities will be brought more to the forefront as a member of the Vikings.
My hope for Shiancoe is that he can turn out to be the kind of acquisition for us that Chester Taylor turned out to be last year. . .sort of an "under the radar" type that didn't really get a whole lot of chances in his previous situation that can bring his skills to Minnesota and finally break out. After having released Jermaine Wiggins and possibly releasing Jim Kleinsasser in the near future, Shiancoe should get plenty of chances to step up at the TE position in Brad Childress' offense.
I'm still looking to see what I can dig up on Vinny Ciurciu, the Vikings' other acquisition today. . .unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot out there about him. I'll try to get something up here in the very near future
