Which College Players Are Future Vikings Week 9 Review and Week 10 Primer

As a USC fan I have to admit that it is disappointing to lose to the Wildcats. Georgia played very well as did Notre Dame. Imagine if Manti Te'o does not change his mind at the last minute and sticks with USC? Imagine if the team doctors would NOT have told Jarvis Jones he probably should retire from football and would have cleared him to play. Man! Te'o and Jones with McDonald at safety. Kansas State put a beat down on Texas Tech. They are quite impressive. Oregon State, Rutgers, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin all were upset.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

The Player of the Week is a tough call this week.

Collin Klein completed 19 out of 26 passes for 233 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed for 83 yards on 12 carries with 2 TDs.
Marqise Lee had 16 catches for 345 yards and 2 TDs.
Austin Hill had 10 catches for 259 yards but zero TDs.
Sammy Watkins had 8 catches for 202 yards but 1 TD.
Manti Te'o had 6 solo tackles & 5 assisted tackles which includes 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 1 interception.

But the winner goes to ...

Jarvis Jones who had 11 solo tackles & 1 assisted tackles which includes 4.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.

I am listing some performances of some of the top players below. I might not have them all here so feel free to add a player who you think did really well and may have vaulted themselves up the draft boards.

Which games will you be watching and which players do you think would be great Vikings?

Here is my weekly mock. The Vikings had a tough home loss this week which exposed some obvious holes in this team. The big debate has been about Ponder as it should be but there is really nothing that can be done besides riding out the situation. I think that there are some other areas that are just as troubling. The offensive guard situation is not where you would want it to be when you consider how much money they are paying Adrian Peterson. I mean why not have an outstanding line in front of him in order for him to gain over 2,000 yards rushing? It kind of speaks to what KJ has been talking about in regards to what the Vikings acheived in free agency. At the end of the day they did not do much at all. A Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs would have been an outstanding addition. Moving forward I do not see Charlie Johnson as a reliable above average offensive guard. I think he is at best average and even that level is not consistent. Fusco is a work in progress and they are trying to work in Schwartz more and more because of Fusco's struggles which are understandable.

The wide receiver situation would be pitiful if not for Percy. It really is sad that the team could not add anyone decent. Simpson is just a guy. He did not do much in Cincy playing opposite AJ Green. Come on man. Who could ask for a better opposite WR? You have to succeed in that situation. I have hope for him as he does seem to have some game. But the rest of the WRs are not too good and that is why many fans were excited about Greg Childs. I hope he can come back but it is not something I would put money on. There were some WRs that signed elsewhere that seem to be contributing like Mario Manningham & Jacoby Jones. The ones we have are just not that good.

The defensive tackle situation is KWill and then some other guys basically. I had feared this scenario and now it is upon us. Defensive tackle has always been one of my favorite positions. I guess growin up watching Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, and that other guy (Larsen) kind of spoiled me but it did give me some perspective of the kind of disruption a dominant defensive line can create for even the best of offenses.

Linebacker is another spot that could use an upgrade. Actually they could be looking for two linebackers next year if they are not happy with Brinkley and Erin H. And why should they be really?

Now we are 5-3 which is still a good first half of the season which not many predicted. But they are trending downward and are entering the real meat and potatoes of the schedule. It is going to get really tough from here on out.

The Vikings are a playoff team right now so I am going to go with #21 this week in my mock.

21. Jesse Williams DT Alabama Sr 6-3 320

I like Williams a lot. He does not have the stats of a Sheldon Richardson or Kawaan Short but he is a load. I think he is exactly what the Vikings need to prevent teams from running up the middle. The other guys may be better in terms of sacks but I want to get that run stopper first. The Vikings have some DT who are pass rush type in Ballard and Guion. I think they need a run stuffing type. Here is what cbssports.com says about him on their big board ...

31. Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama: With only 13 tackles so far this season, this native Australian has hardly provided an all-world performance thus far, statistically speaking. The 6-3, 320-pounder possesses phenomenal strength, even for Alabama (and Australia) standards. Capable of lining up inside at nose guard or moving outside as a five-technique defensive end, he's earning much more attention from NFL scouts than the national media.

51. Quinton Patton WR Louisiana Tech rSr 6-2 195
I like Patton a lot. Here is what it says about him on nfldraftscout.com ...

10/16/12 - 10-15-12 NFL DRAFT SCOUT RISER: WR QUINTON PATTON, LOUISIANA TECH...In a senior class without a clear-cut No. 1 wide receiver prospect, Quinton Patton is making a strong case to be ranked above Baylor’s Terrance Williams, Marshall’s Aaron Dobson and other highly-touted senior wideouts. Although it was somewhat overlooked because his performance came in thrilling loss that didn’t end until early 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, Patton had a career-game against Texas A&M on Saturday night. He finished with 21 catches for 233 yards (11.1 average) and four touchdowns, all career-bests. Listed at 6-2 and 205 pounds, Patton lacks imposing size, but he uses his length well and has deceiving strength to make plays after first contact. He has a great feel in coverage, both before the catch to gain some separation and after the reception to create with the ball in his hands. Patton has quick feet, vision and acceleration to elude defenders and weave through the secondary. He tracks the ball extremely well with very good balance and coordination, quickly turning upfield in the same motion as the catch. Patton won’t test off the charts and plays for a team that doesn’t produce a lot of NFL talent, but he’s a top-100 prospect and rising. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

83. Jamie Collins OLB Southern Mississippi Sr 6-3 240
Collins is a versatile player who could be very good in coverage. Here is his bio ..

2011 (Jr.): Converted to his third position in as many years as the Bandit end in the 4-2-5 defense ... Had his best statistical season with 98 tackles (58 solo, 40 assisted) ... Led the team in tackles for loss with 19.5, ranking him No. 10 nationally, and was second on the squad with 6.5 sacks ... Returned his lone interception of the season 97 yards, a then-school record, at East Carolina (11/5) ... Broke up eight passes and forced one fumble ... Had a season-high 11 tackles at Navy (10/8) ... Started all 13 games ...

111. Marcus Davis WR Virginia Tech rSr 6-4 232 * from Lions
Another player I like with tremendous size and speed. I imagine that he will go earlier than this especially if runs under 4.4 at that size. I may have to pick him in the second round. But that would be based off potential. Patton is producing.

115. Jamar Taylor CB Boise State rSr 5-11 198
Taylor has very good size especially weighing close to 200 pounds. He could run in the high 4.4s which would be pretty good.

10/22/12 - Boise State's dominant defense set the tone again, leading the Broncos to another easy victory. Senior cornerbacks Jamar Taylor and Jerrell Gavins shut down the Rebels' corps of fast, young receivers, accounted for two turnovers and teamed up on a second quarter touchdown that helped put the game out of reach before halftime in a 32-7 rout of UNLV on Saturday night. With Boise State leading 18-0 minutes before the half, Taylor chased down receiver Marcus Sullivan in the middle of the field and stripped the ball. Gavins, trailing behind, scooped up the loose ball and ran untouched 16 yards into the end zone. Minutes before, Gavins squelched the Rebels' best scoring chance with an over-the-shoulder interception in the end zone, and Taylor had a sack to go with his career-high nine tackles to help lead the Broncos to their sixth straight win since losing the opener at Michigan State. "They're very important to this team. They have that senior leadership, and they have that senior mentality," said Boise State coach Chris Petersen. "When those two guys are playing at a high level, I think the rest of the guys feed off them. They're really important out there." They sure were Saturday. The ability of Taylor and Gavins to lock down on Rebel receivers enabled the front four -- minus sack leader Demarcus Lawrence -- to put relentless pressure on UNLV's redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Sherry. - AP Sports

173. Brian Winters OT Kent State Sr 6-5 310 * from Titans
Winters is solid and KSU is playing good this year. The Vikings need to add at least one tackle.

I know that I did not add any offensive linemen until late. But I think the team will probably pass on interior line help this year. We have a lot of holes to fill and cannot do it all at once. I think that when you look at the depth chart you will see that we are very young on the offensive line and we have some players with good size.

Matt Kalil - 6'7" 306 Age 23
Charlie Johnson - 6'4" 305 Age 28
John Sullivan - 6'4" 301 Age 27
Brandon Fusco - 6'4" 306 Age 22
Phil Loadholt - 6'8" 343 Age 26
Geoff Schwartz - 6'6" 331 Age 26
Joe Berger - 6'5" 315 Age 30
Mark Asper - 6'6" 321 Age 26
Demarcus Love - 6'4" 315 Age 22
Troy Kropog - 6'6" 308 Age 26
Kevin Murphy - 6'7" 295 Age 22
Tyler Holmes - 6'5" 308 Age 24

I think Spielman is going to stick with the current group and give them a chance to gel. Asper and Schwartz could replace Johnson and Fusco. Fusco is good to have though. They need a backup for Sullivan.

I also would pick up Brandon Washington OG 6’2.7" 320 from the Rams practice squad and let Joe Berger go. I do not think Berger is bad but since he is already 30 and will be 31 next May, replacing him with a player of Washington’s ability could be a good thing for the offensive line (particularly the guards). Washington was supposedly a 3rd round talent but did not get drafted until the 6th round. Most think he came out too early and needed to mature a little. But he is very talented and also played left tackle for Miami. Not great but he did it which increases his value.

Washington sounds like the kind of player that Davidson can groom into being a pretty good guard. I like Washington's potential and I think he could add some power to the line. But he may be too short for Spielman's taste.

I think adding the wide receivers will only help the depth. I figure Jenkins and Aromatherapy are gone. I think Childs will not make it back all the way and may need an additional season to fully recover. Plus we do not know what he can do at all. Burton could be gone as well. Simpson may or may not be back. Maybe he goes elsewhere if he gets a better offer? Right now I am not sure what they should offer him.

It is clear that we need to add some LBs. Hopefully next year Audie Cole will be ready but as a 7th round draft pick that could be a long shot. Most 7th round draft picks are though. I think they will keep him no matter what happens. They are still developing him and while he is not getting playing time he is getting NFL coaching.

I always think they should add players to the secondary. Hopefully Cook is back and Robinson will have a lot of experience under his belt. I think next year could be the last year for Winfield. It would be if I was in charge. He has been fantastic but sooner or later the wheels are going to go. I think he struggles in pass coverage now as it is. So we need to continue to add secondary help.

Well there it is. I hope that you can watch your team(s) and provide some feedback on players you think that can make it in the NFL
