Antoine Winfield injury: Vikings CB likely to play Week 17

New, comments

Minnesota's Antoine Winfield fractured his hand on Sunday, but is still likely to play this week.

USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield fractured his hand on Sunday, but is still likely to play this week against Green Bay, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500.

Winfield, the Vikings top cornerback and one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, played through the injury in Minnesota's 23-6 win against Houston. He underwent an MRI on Monday which revealed a small fracture in his hand, but he is expected to play with a wrap against the Packers.

Not only is Winfield the Vikings best cornerback, he may be their best defensive player. He is second on the team with 101 total tackles and leads the Vikings with 12 pass deflections. He is also tied for the team lead with three interceptions. While the hand injury isn't expected to keep him off the field against Green Bay, it could limit his effectiveness. Playing with a wrap would likely inhibit his ability to intercept passes and could hinder his ability to tackle.

Minnesota can clinch a playoff spot on Sunday with a win against the Packers.
