The 8th pick is in, and Mock Roger Goodell announces the next mock selection:
"With the 8th pick in the 2012 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select..."
"...Ryan Tannehill, quarterback out of Texas A&M."
It's definitely no surprise that you guys chose a QB for the franchise that has been searching for one since Dan Marino retired. I'm not completely sold that Tannehill is the solution for Miami, but it's hard to imagine the Dolphins passing on him if he's there at #8. So here's the draft recap a quarter of the way through the first round:
- Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB Stanford
- Washington Redskins - Robert Griffin III, QB Baylor
- Minnesota Vikings - Matt Kalil, OT USC
- Cleveland Browns - Trent Richardson, RB Alabama
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Morris Claiborne, CB LSU
- St. Louis Rams - Justin Blackmon, WR Oklahoma State
- Jacksonville Jaguars - Michael Floyd, WR Notre Dame
- Miami Dolphins - Ryan Tannehill, QB Texas A&M
Next up: the Carolina Panthers. While the Dolphins are still searching for an answer at quarterback, the Panthers definitely have theirs in Cam Newton. However, Carolina still needs a lot of help on the defensive end of the ball before becoming a serious contender in the stacked NFC South division. The Panthers were atrocious against the run last year and especially weak through the middle of their defensive line. The good news for Carolina: they should have plenty of options to boost their defense at this point in the draft.
The bad news for us: it's going to be tough to sort through all those options. Let's try to make some sense of it after the jump.
Most major mock drafts have the Panthers picking a defensive lineman in the first round, especially at defensive tackle. Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox is strong and relentless but may lack discipline. Dontari Poe is big and versatile but may need some polishing coming out of Memphis. Michael Brockers can make some huge plays but some of that may have been a product of LSU's stacked defense.
The Panthers might also want to consider a linebacker to help shore up their porous defense. Luke Kuechly and Courtney Upshaw are the consensus top two linebackers in the draft. Of course choosing which one is better depends on who you ask.
Finally, Riley Reiff is still available in this mock draft, and Carolina could always use more quality protection for Newton.
