Welcome to the 2012 Season Soundtrack Track 2 results! Sure, our Minnesota Vikings may be bad this season, or they may be good, but rest assured that we will always find a way to have fun with whatever the 2012 NFL season throws at us.
Competition was spirited thanks to DN readers submitting 27 songs for the Track 2 Challenge. For me, half the fun of these contests is the song selection's musical diversity. An added perk is that I get interesting insights into my fellow writers when they help me choose the winning songs. With the way the picks went for Track 2, I think we may have controversy brewing amidst the writing staff, but more about that later.
Also, I'll share a list of musical selections vying to be the Title Track for our 2012 Season Soundtrack.
Join me after the jump to find out who will be wearing the Burger King crown and what I mean about a potential controversy in the normally tight knit DN staff.
For every contest I compile all the song selections into a list with links to the videos, then I email the list to my fellow writers and wait for them to write back with their song selections. And, generally, Kyle is one of the first to respond. I absolutely love that, but it does make me wonder why he doesn't have anything better to do. Kyle had a clear favorite for Track 2, NORviking's submission "We're Gonna Make It" by Twisted Sister. He had a stipulation on his choice, but we'll get to that later.Ted very generously took a few minutes away from his busy schedule of fishing to weigh in on the discussion. He threw his support to Hellyeah's "Band of Brothers", submitted by DonigwebuikesDimeBag.
Somethings are predictable. Here's one of those things--when Cake's "The Distance" (submitted by CCNorsemen) is on the list, Chris will choose that song. Always. I don't blame him, I've been a fan of that song since 1996. Unlike Ted and Kyle, Chris had a couple more songs in contention for top honors, Michael Buble's "Feeling Good" submitted by Landonio, and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" submitted by NORviking.
This is where things start to get sticky and staff harmony is disrupted. "Call Me Maybe" is a quintessential bubble gum pop song and Kyle was all middle-school girl snippy about it. He went so far as to suggest that even if NORviking's other song "We're Gonna Make It" was chosen, the Burger King crown should not be awarded because submitting "Call Me Maybe" was so bad it pretty much nullified the other song.
Well, it would appear that not everyone felt that way.
Like Chris, I had more than one song I liked for Track 2. I have absolutely delighted in annoying Kyle with LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" for a few months, so I really enjoyed Brent P's submission "NFL Draft Song Parody: Getting Drafted and I Know It" that stars members of Harvard's sailing team. I'm a sucker for a fun parody, and this clever one more than fits the bill. Landonio's other submission "Good Feeling" by Flo Rida also made my list. And...wait for it...I too liked NORviking's selection "Call Me Maybe".
I can see why some might not like the song or think it doesn't belong anywhere near the manly sport of football, but...there's a certain high school/teenage romance quality to the NFL Draft where there's so much flirting, misdirection, and desperation involved with a selection. Mostly I just like the juxtaposition of a teeny-bopper song and the takes-itself-too-seriously NFL Draft. I think it shows a sense of humor.
A sense of humor is something that Eric is not lacking in. Or chutzpah. I couldn't possibly frame his choice better than he did, so here's what Eric had to say about Track 2:
"Call Me Maybe" is the most saccharine, bubble gum, piece of crap since Rebecca Black's "Friday". So of course I'm going with that.
Isn't he a sweet, little gremlin?
Sorry Kyle, with three votes the winner of the Track 2 Challenge for the 2012 Season Soundtrack is Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe". Congratulations NORviking! Wear the Burger King crown with pride, or satire--your choice.
Now, we'll address the matter of our Title Track, the song that will serve as the working title for the 2012 Season Soundtrack. I know it's risky choosing a song for a season that hasn't really started, especially with a team like the Vikings. They have a way of keeping things...interesting. Just about the time we feel really gloomy, the team gives us a reason to be optimistic. Then, when we're getting used to optimism, we get a crummy dose of gloom. Choosing a Title Track for the 2012 Season Soundtrack may require finesse but I believe the DN readers are more than adequate to the challenge.
I want to make sure that everyone who wants to contribute to the Title Track challenge has the opportunity. So, if you missed it last time around, this is your second chance. Limit two songs per person and please include the song title and artist as well as a link to the video on YouTube. Here are the songs that have already been submitted. Good luck!
