Rookie kicker Blair Walsh has won the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award for his four field goals against the Jaguars on Sunday, to include a game tying 55 yarder as time expired in regulation, and the eventual game winner in overtime. This was Walsh's reaction upon being given his major award**:
Fra-ghee-lay...that must be Italian...
According to the Vikes official press release, Walsh is the first rookie kicker in team history to win the award. The last Vikings kicker to win was Ryan Longwell in 2008, and past kickers that won were Fuad Reveiz (twice), Gary Anderson (four times), and Eddie Murray. Longwell was a two time winner as well.
Walsh, a rookie sixth round pick out of Georgia, has come a long way to overcome the doubts about selecting him and supplanting Ryan Longwell, one of the most accurate kickers in team and league history. For one week, anyway, this has worked out well.
Congratulations to Blair Walsh, the week one NFC Special Teams Player Of The Week!
**Probably not his actual reaction. Although that's what the award looks like. Maybe. Probably Not. Not.
