The Seattle Seahawks, looking at a divisional playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, have signed two former Minnesota Vikings to replace players on their rosters that got injured in their victory last Sunday over the Washington Redskins.
The one that everyone will recognize right away is kicker Ryan Longwell. Current Seahawks' kicker Steven Hauschka (who was in camp with the Vikings along with Longwell in 2008) injured his left calf in the game last weekend, and the Seahawks needed a replacement. Enter Longwell, who was cut by the Vikings in May after the drafting of Blair Walsh. The Seahawks likely won't need Longwell on kickoffs. . .punter Jon Ryan handled kickoff duties for Seattle after Hauschka's injury. . .but his accuracy on field goals and extra points will be welcomed with the Seahawks.
The Seahawks also signed a former Vikings' defensive end today. . .and, no, it's not the one you're probably thinking of.
Pete Carroll and company jumped into the Wayback Machine and found former Viking Patrick Chukwurah. Yes, Patrick Chukwurah. Chukwurah was drafted by the Vikings in the fifth round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of Georgia Tech the University of Wyoming, and spent two years with the Vikings, seeing time at both linebacker and defensive end. He also saw time with the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos (where he had his most productive years), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oh, and he hasn't played in the NFL since 2008. He led the UFL in sacks twice as a member of the Florida Tuskers in 2009 and 2010, and since then has been working as a personal trainer. He will be expected to provide some pass rush after the Seahawks lost Chris Clemons to a torn ACL on the slop that was FedEx Field on Sunday.
Yes, the Seahawks did work out former Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards, among others. . .and decided a guy that hasn't been on an NFL field since 2008 was a better option. Man. . .if that guy hadn't been such a jerk about wanting to get out of Minnesota, I'd almost feel bad for him.
(Failed to point out that Victor-E had this in the FanPosts first. Well, the Longwell part of it anyway. So there you go.)
