Which College Players Are Future Vikings Week 6 Review and Week 7 Primer

Week 6 of college football is in the books. There were some great games. Washington vs Stanford, Georgia vs Tennessee, & Ohio State vs Northwestern to name a few. Alabama had a very tough matchup in Georgia State. They have to play the powerhouse Chattanooga later too. Gonna be rough. I don't really think there were any upsets besides a couple of mild ones like Notre Dame over Arizona State and Auburn over Ole Miss. There were some close calls.

The game of the week award is a tie and goes to Texas vs Iowa State and Georgia vs Tennessee!

I will base my mock off the record each week. Since there was no game last week the team is 1-3 and I think in the #6 spot.

Obviously the QB position has changed.  Josh Freeman may or my not prove to be an upgrade.  MBT is no a 49er.  What a shame.  That means Ponder stays on the team.  What a waste.  I mean I would try to move him for whatever I could get.  Even if they cut him after this season they will still take a cap hit of about 3.2 mil I think.  I am not sure if his salary next year would count towards another teams cap and his remaining prorated signing bonus would count count against the Vikings.  It does not matter for the purpose of this post.

It could be they keep Ponder through next year as the backup.  Nothing Ponder can do but complain and I am not sure if he is that kind of player.  Interesting.

I still think a QB will get drafted but now it is in flux.  If a guy is there early then they should take him and let him sit for a year or two.  Drafting 6th would be a good spot to take one of the top QBs this next year.  That is what I should do in this mock but you know I will not.  I have to do something different.

So without further ado ...

6. Sammy Watkins  WR  Clemson  Jr  6-1  205

I know, I know.  WTF?  A WR in the first round?  That is preposterous, ludicrous, outrageous!   Or just plain stupid no?  Well  let me direct you to this scouting report  http://www.footballoutsiders.com/futures/2013/futures-clemson-wr-sammy-watkins.

While it does seem like overkill with Jennings and Patterson, I contend that the team still needs more weapons.  Simpson may not be back and the team myay not want him back.  Jennings has not really lived up to that contract yet either through no fault of his own.  I am not sure how long Jennings is going to last and I am leaning towards the thinking that he is not going to prove he is worth that deal.  So in 2014, Watkins will not have to a hole heck of a lot.  But when you consider Jennings can work in the slot, you now can have Patterson, Watkins, and Jennings as the WRs to go with AP.  That is pretty good.

I expect the calls for a QB here and maybe that is the direction I will go eventually.  But now that the team has Freeman the situation is muddled.  Plus, Hundley and Marriota have not declared and may not.  That leaves Bridgewater, Boyd, and Manziel as the 3 top QBs.  I expect that two could be gone by #6.

I did not think a tackle like Taylor Lewan, Jake Matthews, or Cyrus Kouandjio would be good picks here unless I could project one of them to play some guard at the start of their career.  Maybe one of them can but it does not seem like good value.

The only other players I thought of are Louis Nix III, CJ Mosley, or Anthony Barr.  I am a big fan of the big DT for sure but I think they can find one later and possibly even get one via free agency.  I am not even sure they want a big body like Nix either although many fans believe that is what this defense has been missing.

So Sammy Watkins looks really good right here and would look even better in purple!   I mean come on now.  That is a pretty good set of WRs no?

38. Yawin Smallwood  ILB  Connecticut  rJr  6-2  244

I think the Vikings will be looking for another LB because Erin H and Desmond Bishop are probably not the long term answer.  One of them may not even be back next year and Mauti, Hodges, Coles, etc are all unproven.  Smallwood is a very good player and it is about time the team took a LB higher in the draft.

70. Deone Bucannon  SS  Washington State  Sr  6-1  215

I still have Bucannon in my mock and it is hard to mock someone else to be honest. I think he may go higher.  He is one of my favorites this year and we need safeties bad.  You have to keep adding them that is for sure.

91. Kyle Fuller  CB  Virginia Tech  Sr  6-0  190

Obviously the CB situation is not looking too good right now.  But I like Rhodes and Robinson.  I am in the minority about Robinson but I think he is going to get better.  At least he can play most of the games.  Cook is unreliable.  I really do not know what kind of deal the team should offer considering his injury history.  If he can somehow make it through the rest of this year playing in every game and playing well, then CB may not be a high priority.

102. Scott Crichton  DE  Oregon State  rJr  6-3  265

I think this is about the point where Spielman will take a DE.  I cannot see him taking one earlier unless Clowney somehow falls to #6.  I think it is possible considering what is going on this year.  The Vikings have been lucky in the draft with players falling to them in the past.  We can only hope they take those players.

134. Jimmy Garoppolo  QB  Eastern Illinois  Sr  6-2  222

Here we go.  A QB prospect with lots of upside.  I may have to push him up into the 4th round pick before it is all said and done.  Could it be another Tony Romo or better?

166. Venric Mark  WR  Northwestern  Sr  5-7  175

He played great vs Ohio State and could go a lot higher than this for sure.  But not today.

198. Shamar Stephen  DT  Connecticut  rSr  6-5  323

I like this player and he has that size that everyone craves.  He was impressive vs Michigan too.

Here is an alternate draft that is more what I would love to happen if the Vikings are indeed drafting #6 ...

6. Jadeveon Clowney  DE  South Carolina  Jr  6-5  274
38. Jordan Matthews  WR  Vanderbilt  Sr  6-3  205
70. Deone Bucannon  SS  Washington State  Sr  6-1  215
91. Kyle Fuller  CB  Virginia Tech  Sr  6-0  190
102. Shayne Skov  ILB  Stanford  rSr  6-2  245
134. Jimmy Garoppolo  QB  Eastern Illinois  Sr  6-2  222
166. Venric Mark  WR  Northwestern  Sr  5-7  175
198. Shamar Stephen  DT  Connecticut  rSr  6-5  323

Just for fun, here is another draft with a trade down from #6.

The Vikings trade the #6 pick to the Cleveland Browns for both of their 1st round picks which I am projecting to be #19 and #28 (from Indy) this week.

19. Kyle Van Noy  OLB  Brigham Young  rSr  6-3  235
28. Stephon Tuitt  DE/DT  Notre Dame  Jr  6-6  312
38. Gabe Jackson  OG  Mississippi State  rSr  6-3  340
70. Aaron Colvin  CB  Oklahoma  Sr  6-0  182
91. Jared Abbrederis  WR  Wisconsin  rSr  6-1  190
102. Shayne Skov  ILB  Stanford  rSr  6-2  245
134. Jimmy Garoppolo  QB  Eastern Illinois  Sr  6-2  222
166. Venric Mark  RB/WR  Northwestern  Sr  5-7  175
198. Billy Turner  OT  North Dakota State  Sr  6-5  310

Well, there you have it.  Enjoy the games!
