I will base my mock off the record each week. After last week the team is 1-6 and now in the #3 spot.

Ponder got the start last week and pretty much looked like the same player.  Many will say it was not his fault they lost and this is true.  But it is also not his fault they won.  This is a bad experiment that I do not think is going to have a happy ending.  And I like happy endings!

The team also did not make any moves this week either to get MOAR draft picks.  Oh well.  I will just have to come up with my own as I am wont to do.  :)

So there are no player trades this week.

3. Johnny Manziel  QB  Texas A&M  rSo  5-11  210

Considering the QB situation with the Vikings, it is clear that we need some help.  We do not know what Freeman is going to show or if he will even want to stay here next year.  He could easily leave and go to another team that needs a QB.  You never know if he may want to try out a situation on another team.  Maybe Arizona makes him an offer?  It is nice and warm there.  Maybe Oakland makes him an offer?  Doubtful.  The Vikings still have AP though which could help to sway him.  Of course he could stink it up and then we are really in trouble.

So right now I am down to two QBs in the first round.   Manziel and Mariota.  If they both come out it will be tough.  Maybe I go with Mariota because of his size?  But I like Manziel because he just gets it done.  When you do what he did to Alabama after Nick Saban had all summer to game plan for him then you know he can play.  Also, I think Manziel is more likely to come out then Mariota.  If Mariota comes out then the debates will be endless.

I also considered Anthony Barr here but I am not sure of his position.  Will he play as a 4-3 DE?  He needs to gain about 20 lbs provided that he weighs 244 now.  Will he play WLB or even MLB?  It is tough to pick a player this high when you are not sure of his position.  Heck we may even have a whole new defensive system next year if they get a new coach.

35. Trent Murphy  DE  Stanford  rSr  6-6  261

I expect the Vikings will lose Allen in free agency and I do not think they will go after a Michael Johnson or Greg Hardy to replace him.  I expect they will try to sign Everson Griffen to be the DE to replace Allen.  Murphy will be an excellent backup for both DE spots and can take over for Robison in a couple of years.  Spotrac does not have Robison's new deal up yet but it was a 4 year 28 mil deal with 13.15 guaranteed.  That sounds like it will not be too much of a cap hit if they decided to let him go after two years.  I am not saying they will but I think the contract is most likely designed to give them the option.  He does turn 31 next April.

67. Yawin Smallwood  ILB  Connecticut  rJr  6-2  244

I think the Vikings need a new ILB.  I do not know if Mauti or Hodges will be the answer and I think Greenway could be asked to take a pay cut during this next off season.  He will be 31 next year and has an 8.2 mil cap hit followed by an 8.8 mil cap hit in 2015.  I think the team may want to try and adjust those years.  They still need to start preparing for his eventual departure.  I do not know what will happen with Erin H although he is not playing bad at all.  Not great but not horrible either.  Smallwood may be able to play OLB as well.  The point is that they need to add some LBs a bit earlier in the draft.

94. DaQuan Jones  DT  Penn State  Sr  6-3  318

I still like Jones and am hoping he lasts this long.  Realistically he probably does not.  I also hope the Vikings are active in free agency and will try to land one solid DT.   Henry Melton, Lamarr Houston, and Linval Joseph are 3 players I would want to see them target.

99. Jack Mewhort  OT  Ohio State  rSr  6-6  308

I keep coming back to Mewhort.  He has played 5 games at right guard and 8 games at left guard in 2011 before playing all 12 games at left tackle in 2012 and all the games this year too.  I see him as a guard for the Vikings at the start of his career and then possibly moving out to right tackle once the Vikings decide to part ways with Loadholt.  Even if they do not do that, Mewhort has the versatility to slide to either tackle spot if there is an unfortunate injury.

131. Telvin Smith  OLB  Florida State  Sr  6-2  218

I think Smith is the kind of LB the Vikings need to look at more.  A bit undersized but can cover.  Smith may put on 7 to 10 lbs too which should be good enough.  Worse case scenario is he can be part of a nickel or dime package.

163. Carlos Hyde  RB  Ohio State  rSr  6-0  235

The Vikings will have to replace Toby and Hyde can run , catch, and block.  He is not a change of pace type back but he can carry the load if needed.

195. Spencer Long  OG  Nebraska  rSr  6-4  315

I think picking up Long late could be a steal.  He hurt his knee on COt 12th vs Purdue and needs to have surgery.  He likely will not even be ready to go by training camp.  Long made 2nd team All American in 2012.  The Vikings need guards and this guy could be good once he recovers.  I thought about trying to get him as an UDFA but he is too good to take a risk.

Trey Burton  WR  Florida  Sr  6-2  225

Here is another mock ...

4. Jake Matthews  OT  Texas A&M  Sr  6-5  305
36. Kyle Van Noy  OLB  Brigham Young  rSr  6-3  235
68. Justin Gilbert  CB  Oklahoma State  Sr  6-0  200
94. Shayne Skov  ILB  Stanford  rSr  6-2  245
100. Scott Crichton  DE  Oregon State  rJr  6-3  265
132. Rashad Greene  WR  Florida State  Jr  6-0  180
164. Bene Benwikere  CB  San Jose State  Sr  5-11  192
196. Shamar Stephen  DT  Connecticut  rSr  6-5  313

I do like the idea of picking Jake Matthews at #3.  I think he can slide inside for a year or two (max) and then play tackle.  If the Vikings are drafting that high and there are no QBs and Clowney is gone too, then Matthews presents excellent value.

Well, there you have it. Enjoy the games!
