In the hours leading up to last night's game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Washington Redskins, the Vikings did something that, I fear, will shake the foundations of The Daily Norseman directly to its core.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, in order to promote offensive tackle Kevin Murphy from the practice squad to the active roster. . .the Vikings released linebacker Audie Cole.
Cole had become a bit of a favorite around here since being drafted by the Vikings in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of North Carolina State. His biggest highlight came when he intercepted passes on two consecutive plays in a pre-season game against the Buffalo Bills, returning both of them for touchdowns.
Cole has cleared waivers, and is now available as a free agent.
So, light a candle or pour one out or whatever it is that you choose to do on this saddest of occasions. The Audie Cole era in Minnesota has, officially, come to an end.
