Which College Players Are Future Vikings Week 15 Review and Bowl Week 1 Primer

Now that the season is wrapped up the conference champions should be congratulated. Baylor should send Oklahoma a fruit cake at the very least. Auburn, Michigan State, and Bowling Green deserve kudos for their impressive performances. Florida State is a mystery to me. They played nobody this year besides Clemson and Miami. I am not too impressed with their schedule. But if they can beat Auburn then they will be the Champions.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

I am not a fan of the bowl games and while I watch them, I do not put much stock into them.  I know a lot of fans will point to how a conference does in bowl games and use that as a measure of strength.  I think that is a flawed way of looking at the bowl games.  Teams have a whole month to prepare.  Some teams get rusty.  If you have to play tough teams week in and week out then that would be impressive.  Arizona State started off the year playing Wisconsin, Stanford, USC, and Notre Dame in weeks 2 through 5.  Then they finished the season playing Oregon State, UCLA, Arizona, and Stanford.  I'd like to see Florida State play that schedule.

I would like to see the Division 1 schools have a bigger playoff than 4 teams.  That would still cause problems.  For example, Ohio State could be pissed that they would get left out while Alabama would be in the playoff.  Here is what I would do with the bowls ...

I would take the top 32 teams in match them up according to the BCS rankings.  The first round would be 16 games which could be played at the teams with the best record home field.  The second round would be 8 games which would be at the current bowl sites.  The third round would be 4 games at the current bowl sites.  The fourth round would be 2 games at the current bowl sites.  The last round would be the championship game.

Now that is 5 extra games which is improbable if not impossible.  You cannot ask kids to play that many games.  There would have to be less games during the regular season.  This would cause problems all over the place as schools need those home games and the TV deals also require some games.  Basically 32 teams and 5 rounds is out.

Would having 16 teams be better?  That would mean 4 extra games and would also be tough.

I think 8 teams is about as much as you can reasonably ask.  That would be 3 more games.  The schools could find some way to play less games per year even if it is mandated.  I mean Alabama certainly did not have to play Georgia Southern or Chattanooga. So if each school had one less game they would still be playing possibly one more game as they will next year provided they make it to the final game.

My first round would be played on Dec 24th ...

#1 Florida State vs #8 Missouri at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville FL
#2 Auburn vs #7 Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas TX
#3 Alabama vs #6 Baylor at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale AZ
#4 Michigan State vs #5 Stanford at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena CA

My predicted second round would be playe don January 1st ...

#1 Florida State vs #5 Stanford at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans LA
#2 Auburn vs #3 Alabama at the Orange Bowl in Miami FL

My predicted final round would be January 8th ...

#3 Alabama  vs #5 Stanford at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena CA

... of course the locations and bowl could change and rotate.  I am not going to try and figure that out and even the example I gave above is just a wild guess.

I will base my mock off the record each week. After last week the team is 4-9-1 and now are in the #8 spot.  I think the consensus is the Vikings need to get a QB but at #8 the prospect they like could be gone.  Then if they wait to the second round their other choice could be gone.  Obviously no one wants to see them reach for a QB that may or may not pan out.  But QBs usually get pushed up the board because they are so valuable.  Ideally, Hundley and Bortles declare for the draft.  Then you have Bridgewater, Manziel, Hundley, Carr, & Bortles all possibly being first round picks.  The draft gods could be kind to the Vikings once again if the teams at the top decide they will wait until the second round or try to move up to the latter half of the first round.

Here is my mock for this week ...

8. Derek Carr  QB  Fresno State  rSr  6-3  215
40. Aaron Donald  DT  Pittsburgh  Sr  6-0  285
72. Christian Jones  ILB  Florida State  Sr  6-3  232
96. Joel Bitonio  OT  Nevada  rSr  6-4  315
104. Kenny Ladler  FS  Vanderbilt  Sr  6-0  205
136. Stanley Jean-Baptiste  CB  Nebraska  Sr  6-2  220
168. Kareem Martin  DE  North Carolina  Sr  6-5  265
200. Tim Flanders  RB  Sam Houston State  rSr  5-9  212

UDFA
Shaquelle Evans  WR  UCLA  rSr  6-1  204
Silas Redd  RB  Southern California  Sr  5-9  200
Shaquil Barrett  OLB  Colorado State  Sr  6-2  250
Spencer Long  OG  Nebraska  rSr  6-4  315
Brock Vereen  SS  Minnesota  Sr  5-11  202
Kevin Graf  OT  Southern California  rSr  6-6  295
Jeff Mathews  QB  Cornell  Sr  6-3  224
Xavius Boyd  OLB  Western Kentucky  Sr  6-1  242
Glenn Carson  ILB  Penn State  rSr  6-3  235
Keith Smith  ILB  San Jose State  Sr  6-0  230
Trevor Gillette  LS  Rice  Sr  6-3  240
Allen Hurns  WR  Miami (Fla.)  Sr  6-2  195

I am hoping that they can get Carr now.  It could be that the top 3 QBs are off the board.  The Texans, Jaguars, Raiders, and Browns all could be in the market for a QB.  Heck, even the Rams could surprise people and take one too.  If that is the case then another player will fall to the Vikings.  For now, I am sticking with seniors in my mock.  I have to wait another few weeks to find out who is coming out so I can finish off my draft board.  Yeah right.  I ain't got no draft board or a ouija board.  I just use the force.  That is how I become enamored with Tim Tebow.

There are some players that I would like the Vikings to snag off practice squads but I believe it could be too late for that now.  But here they are anyway ...

Browns - Frederick, Terrence CB
Broncos - Painter, Vinston OT, Moore, Brandon NT
Lions - Fuller, Corey WR
Dolphins - Kaddu, Josh OLB
Saints - Kelemete, Senio OG
Jets - Dowling, Ras-I CB
Raiders - Montgomery, Sam OLB
Chargers - Becton, Nick OT, Manning, Terrell ILB
Seahawks - Smith, D'Anthony DT
49ers - Wylie, Devon WR, Bethel-Thompson, McLeod QB
Bucs - Dawkins, Everett D
