The one thing that the Minnesota Vikings did not want to see this season may have just happened.
On a 3rd-and-5 play from the Minnesota 25 in the second quarter against the Baltimore Ravens, Peterson took a short pass from Matt Cassel and attempted to stretch out for a first down, and went down in a great deal of pain. From looking at the replay, it appears to be an ankle injury of some sort, but it's too early to speculate too much at this point. The trainers were attempting to have him flex and turn his ankle, so that's what it appears to be.
Peterson is currently the National Football League's leading rusher with over 1,200 yards coming into today's contest. He is attempting to become the first running back in NFL history to follow up a 2,000 yard rushing season with a season of at least 1,500 yards.
When we have more information on Peterson's injury, we will pass it along to you. Hopefully it's nothing too serious in what's quickly become a lost season for the Vikings.
UPDATE: Peterson has officially been ruled as "questionable" to return with an ankle injury.
UPDATE to the UPDATE: Peterson is now at a local MRI facility having tests done. He's officially listed as "doubtful," but he's not even in the building, so he's not coming back. Starting guard Brandon Fusco has been ruled out for the remainder of the game as well.
UPDATE to the UPDATE to the UPDATE: Peterson has officially been ruled out of the game.
UPDATE to the. . .well, you get it: Peterson is back on the Vikings' sidelines, and has apparently been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain that is not believed to be serious. More official word will be forthcoming after the game.
