Where We Answer The Vikings' Salary Cap Question

The other day, Ted asked how much salary cap space the Minnesota Vikings had left after the signings of wide receiver Greg Jennings and backup quarterback Matt Cassel.

Well, thanks to the folks at 1500 ESPN, now we know. . .and, once again, it appears that Rob Brzezinski has done some solid work for the Vikings.

According to a source with knowledge of the contract, Jennings received a $10 million signing bonus in addition to fully guaranteed base salaries of $2.9 million in 2013 and $4.9 million in 2014. His cap number is only $5 million in 2013 and $7 million in 2014 before the deal spikes.

Jennings' scheduled base salary is $8.9 million in 2015, '16 and '17, with a cap number of $11 million each of those seasons. He also has a $100,000 workout bonus in each year and escalators in 2014 through '17 that could push the total value even higher.

So, as Tom Pelissero notes in the article, the Vikings can cut Jennings after the first two years of the deal without paying him another cent.

As a result of this, the Vikings are still nearly $6 million under the salary cap. Still, unless somebody else restructures their deal or something like that, I wouldn't anticipate many more moves from the Vikings. After all, there are still rookies that need to be signed and all that.

But the Vikings' cap situation isn't quite as dire as we might have thought it was after those two signings, which is nice.
