Vikings Day 3 Mock

Well the first two days of the draft are done. The Vikings started with 4 picks and only came away with 3 players. As you all know, those 3 players were pretty dang good (on paper). Sure they all have some things to improve upon but all draft picks do. It was a great first day. No two ways about that.

Jeff Blake-US PRESSWIRE

The second day was as it should be. I was hoping the Vikings would trade up to get a player but Spielman did not want to give up the future picks or more picks from this year. I am not sure there was any trade that could be executed anyway. I think it was good to stand pat because the Vikings need these 5 picks today. They need to add more players to the roster who could hopefully make a difference.

So what should they do?

There are a lot of players I like that are still available. Jesse Williams, Barrett Jones, Quinton Patton, Bacarri Rambo, Phillip Thomas, Alex Okafor, William Gholston, Khaseem Greene, David Quessenberry, Cornelius Washington, Jordan Poyer, Chase Thomas, Ryan Swope, Ryan Nassib, Landry Jones, Stepfan Taylor, Chris Harper, etc.

My first instinct is to trade up for Jesse Williams. But I do not see the Vikings having anything to give. I certainly would not want to give up more picks. And the future picks idea is out as Spielman has said he wants to keep all his picks next year. They have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds already. Now we all know what he says and does could be two different things and often it is the case. So he could trade a future later pick but not any of those first 4 picks.

I can think of trading Robison and our 6th round pick to the Jaguars for their 4th round pick. Maybe even get them to trade for Allen. But that is a pipe dream. I doubt Allen will agree to renegotiate his deal for the Jaguars. Robison may be willing to resign with them.

I could think of trading our 5th round pick and Gerhart to the Raiders for their 4th round pick and a 5th round pick next year or something in that range. Oakland could use someone to help out McFadden because he is hurt way too much. They did sign Rashad Jennings as a free agent though. And they still can get a back in this draft. Not one like Toby though. Still not likely.

I think we will have to wait it out and most of the players I mentioned above will come off the board.

I cannot project any trades to move up either.

So here is my mock for day 3 of the NFL 2013 Draft.

4.26 - Devin Taylor DE South Carolina rSr 6-7 266
5.22 - Kenjon Barner RB Oregon rSr 5-9 196
6.21 - Jake Knott OLB Iowa State Sr 6-2 243
7.7 - Cooper Taylor SS Richmond rSr 6-5 228
7.8 - Charles Johnson WR Grand Valley State rSr 6-2 215

Now if I wanted to be crazy then I would do trades of current players ...

Trade Brian Robison and our 6th round pick to the Jaguars for their 4th round pick.

4.1 - Jordan Poyer CB Oregon State Sr 6-0 191

Trade Chris Cook to the Panthers for their 4th round pick #108

4.11 - Barrett Jones C Alabama rSr 6-5 306
4.26 - Devin Taylor DE South Carolina rSr 6-7 266

Trade Letroy Guoin to the Seahwaks for their 5th round pick #158

5.22 - Kenjon Barner RB Oregon rSr 5-9 196
5.25 - Nicholas Williams DT Samford rSr 6-5 309
6.21 - Jake Knott OLB Iowa State Sr 6-2 243
7.7 - Cooper Taylor SS Richmond rSr 6-5 228
7.8 - Charles Johnson WR Grand Valley State rSr 6-2 215

After the draft I would try to sing these undrafted free agents ...

Ryan Allen P Louisiana Tech rSr 6-1 229
Sean Renfree QB Duke rSr 6-3 219
Nick Becton OT Virginia Tech rSr 6-5 323
Sam Barrington ILB South Florida Sr 6-1 246
Miguel Maysonet RB Stony Brook Sr 5-9 209
Braden Wilson FB Kansas State rSr 6-4 251
Matt Summers-Gavin OG California rSr 6-4 310
Rashard Hall FS Clemson rSr 6-2 210
Luke Ingram LS Hawaii Sr 6-5 258
Michael Williams TE Alabama rSr 6-6 278
Glenn Foster DE Illinois Sr 6-4 286
D.J. Harper RB Boise State rSr 5-9 211
A.J. Bouye CB UCF Sr 6-0 186
DeVonte Christopher WR Utah rSr 6-0 188
A.J. Francis DT Maryland rSr 6-5 309

And then I would try to get a couple of players from other roster.

First thing I would try to do is get the Giants to trade Marvin Austin DT North Carolina. Now this is probably a pipe dream but they drafted Johnathan Hankins and Damontre Moore. They have Cullen Jenkins (who is older), Shaun Rogers (also older), Mike Patterson (signed as a free agent), Linval Joseph, and Markus Kuhn. They are loaded at the DT position and something has to give. At least 2 or 3 players are going to get let go.

So, I would offer a conditional 2014 5th round pick for Austin.

Next I would talk to the Saints about Martez Wilson. I am not sure when he is going to get more playing time there. They drafted him in 2011 but then signed David Hawthorne and Curtis Lofton as free agents in 2012. They also added Victor Butler as a free agent this year.

I think a conditional 2014 6th round pick for Wilson is what I would offer.

Well there you have it. I think none of this happens to be honest. It would not surprise me if none of the players I mentioned in this post become Vikings. Not even the UDFAs. I am usually wrong after all. But I hope I am right. :)
