Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, to The Daily Norseman's Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament! In case you're wondering why this is the first match-up. . .well, there really is no reason. We're just going to sort of randomly pick match-ups for each day as we go along, I think. It will keep you good people on your toes. . .don't want to get predictable or anything.
For the first match-up of the first round, we have the man that might be the most dynamic playmaker in the history of the team taking on the man that has been the voice of the Minnesota Vikings for over a decade.
Randy Moss
Alma Mater: Marshall University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 1, 1998 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 7-ish (1998-2004, plus four games in 2010)
Position: Wide receiver
What can be said about Randy Moss? From his slide down the draft board into Minnesota's lap in 1998 to pairing with Cris Carter as one of the best 1-2 punches in the history of the game, Moss made every game the Vikings played during his tenure a "must-watch." A lot of his detractors will remember him more for his off-field headlines, but he did a lot of great stuff off the field that never got reported. On the field, however, he really had no peer during his heyday.
Still, absolutely, one of the most ridiculous catches you'll ever see.
Paul Allen
Alma Mater: I'll be honest. . .I don't know. (Has he ever mentioned it?)
Acquired by Vikings: Became Vikings' announcer prior to 2002 season.
Seasons in Minnesota: 11 (2002-present)
Position: Play-by-play vox
Paul Allen is a bit of a divisive figure among Vikings fans, to say the least. Whether you enjoy his announcing style or not, there is no denying his passion for Minnesota Vikings football. Personally, I like his style because he's a homer, and that's the way team announcers should be. I want a guy in the press box that gets as excited as I do when my team does well, and gets as angry as I do when my team does badly. That's what Paul Allen brings to the proverbial table.
(Yeah, like you didn't know that's exactly where we were going.)
The voting for this one is going to be simple, folks. Underneath this post, you will see two comments.
If you want to vote for Randy Moss, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Randy Moss"
If you want to vote for Paul Allen, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Paul Allen"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next match-up will be posted.
Have at it, ladies and gentlemen!
