Welcome to the continuation of the first round of our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament, everybody! We've got two first round match-ups in the books, and starting today we'll be bringing you two each day until we get through the first round of competition.
This match-up brings you a name that's synonymous with Minnesota Vikings football taking on an offensive lineman that was an underrated part of the team's offensive line for many seasons.
Fran Tarkenton
Alma Mater: University of Georgia
Acquired by Vikings: Round 3, 1961 NFL Draft; trade with New York Giants, 1967
Seasons in Minnesota: 13 (1961-1966; 1972-1978)
Position: Quarterback
Fran Tarkenton is one of the most prolific quarterbacks not just in Minnesota Vikings history, but in the history of the National Football League. When he retired, he held virtually every major passing record the league had to offer, including yardage and touchdown passes. As you can see above, he had two separate stints with the Vikings, and was the team's quarterback for three of their four Super Bowl appearances. There's a reason that Sir Francis is one of the top four seeds in this tournament.
Tim Irwin
Alma Mater: University of Tennessee
Acquired by Vikings: Round 3, 1981 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 13 (1981-1993)
Position: Offensive Tackle
Irwin took over at right tackle for Hall of Famer Ron Yary in 1982 (his second season), and held down the position for basically the entirety of his career in purple. Not only was Irwin a standout on the offensive line, but he had a propensity for blocking kicks as well. He's third on the Vikings all-time list in that category with 10, and even had two in one game against the Atlanta Falcons in 1985. A guy that never got the recognition he deserved from the public at large, Viking fans know how much he meant to the team for over a decade.
Voting procedure is going to be the same as it was yesterday, folks.
-If you want to vote for Fran Tarkenton, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Fran Tarkenton"
