I'm going to go way out on a limb and predict that someone named Steve is going to win this first round match-up here in our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament. This match-up will pit one of the best offensive linemen of his generation against a tight end that might be the best the Vikings have ever had at the position.
Steve Hutchinson
Alma Mater: University of Michigan
Acquired by Vikings: Signed as free agent prior to 2006 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 6 (2006-2011)
Position: Guard
Everyone knows the story of how Steve Hutchinson came to become a member of the Minnesota Vikings, thanks to the infamous "poison pill" contract brouhaha with the Seattle Seahawks. Regardless of the circumstances that Hutchinson came to Minnesota under, you could quite competently argue that he was the best free agent signing the Vikings have ever made. He teamed with Matt Birk and Bryant McKinnie to form a fine left side of the offensive line for most of his Vikings tenure, and he blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher every year he was in Minnesota except for 2011, when Adrian Peterson's injury left him just 30 yards short of that mark.
Not a lot of Steve Hutchinson highlight videos on YouTube, so we went the community service route.
Steve Jordan
Alma Mater: Brown University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 7, 1982 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 13 (1982-1994)
Position: Tight End
Steve Jordan is probably the most prolific tight end in the history of the Minnesota Vikings. In his thirteen seasons in Minnesota, he racked up 6,307 yards on 498 catches. Those numbers put him sixth in Vikings' history in terms of yardage and fifth in terms of receptions. He was also selected to six consecutive Pro Bowls from 1986 to 1991. Jordan was a steady presence for the Vikings, with his underrated blocking skills complementing what he brought in the passing game for Minnesota's version of the West Coast offense.
The Jordan catch in the highlight video above comes at about the 35-second mark of the clip.
Here's a review of how the voting process works, folks.
-If you want to vote for Steve Hutchinson, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Steve Hutchinson"
-If you want to vote for Steve Jordan, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Steve Jordan"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments. Remember. . .only recs count, so make sure that's how you register your vote.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next two match-ups will be posted.
Have at it, everybody!
