Our quest to determine who is the greatest to don the purple continues with this first round match-up in our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament. This time around, we have a match-up between a recent Hall of Famer and a true all-time great against a guy that many have a soft spot for despite his diminutive stature.
Randall McDaniel
Alma Mater: Arizona State University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 1, 1988 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 12 (1988-1999)
Position: Guard
McDaniel's resume pretty much speaks for itself. He started from Day 1 after being drafted by the Vikings, and was named to the Pro Bowl every single year he was a Viking. He was also a first-team All-Pro every year from 1990 to 1998. He was a member of the National Football League's all-decade team for the 1990s, a member of the Minnesota Vikings' Ring of Honor, and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009. If there have been guards in the history of the National Football League better than Randall McDaniel, you could probably count them on one hand. . .and still have fingers left over.
Fuad Reveiz
Alma Mater: University of Tennessee
Acquired by Vikings: Signed as free agent during 1990 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 5-ish (1990-1995)
Position: Kicker
After being cut by the San Diego Chargers after the first month of the 1990 NFL season, Reveiz found his way to Minnesota, where he replaced Donald Igwebuike (still one of the great names in all of sports). Reveiz wasn't the best kicker in Minnesota Vikings history, but he was one of the toughest. He's perhaps best-known for garnering a couple of unnecessary roughness penalties on kick coverage. An injury to his non-kicking foot forced him to retire after the 1995 season, after which he went on to become a star on, of all places, the DiY Network.
Unfortunately, all of Reveiz's YouTube highlights are of him in college, so there's nothing more to add here.
Here's a review of how the voting process works, folks.
-If you want to vote for Randall McDaniel, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Randall McDaniel"
-If you want to vote for Fuad Reveiz, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Fuad Reveiz"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments. Remember. . .only recs count, so make sure that's how you register your vote.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next two match-ups will be posted.
Have at it, everybody!
