Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament: Robert Smith Advances

RVR Photos-USA TODAY Sports

It was the closest first round match-up we've had thus far in our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament, but in the end, one of the most talented running backs in the history of the Minnesota Vikings ensure that at least one of the legendary Purple People Eaters would not make the second round.

In a very tight race, Robert Smith edged out Gary Larsen in this head-to-head battle. When everything was tallied up, Smith had 106 "recs" and Larsen wound up with 92 "recs." I know that a lot of people probably aren't going to be big fans of this result, and I personally thought Larsen was a bit under-seeded, but that's where the chips fell, and that's how this particular match-up went.

In the second round, Smith will do battle against either running back Chuck Foreman or guard Ed White.

There are still plenty of first round match-ups to come in our quest to determine who the greatest Minnesota Viking of all time is in the eyes of you, the Daily Norseman readers. Thanks for all your participation thus far!
