We continue on through the first round of our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament! In this match-up, we pit one of the best offensive linemen in team history against the all-time leading scorer in Minnesota Vikings history.
Matt Birk
Alma Mater: Harvard University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 6, 1998 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 11 (1998-2008)
Position: Center
Another in the Vikings' long line of outstanding play at the center position, local guy Matt Birk did an incredible job of following in the footsteps of the departed Jeff Christy. He was a six-time Pro Bowl selection and a two-time All-Pro (2000 and 2003). He was also named the Minnesota Vikings Man of the Year an incredible six years in a row, every year from 2002 to 2007. And, as we all know. . .
Matt Birk. . .he went to Harvard. (No, it's never going to stop being funny.)
Fred Cox
Alma Mater: University of Pittsburgh
Acquired by Vikings: Signed with Vikings prior to 1963 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 15 (1963-1977)
Position: Kicker
The man known as "Super Toe". . .I think that's two words and not one. . .Fred Cox is still the leading scorer in Minnesota Vikings history with 1,365 points. That tally more than doubles that of the man in second place, Cris Carter with 670 career points. Cox played all of his fifteen seasons with the Vikings, and is one of only ten players to play on all four Vikings Super Bowl teams. And, on top of all that, he's the inventor of the Nerf football, which is kind of cool.
Yeah, not a lot of Fred Cox highlights on YouTube, unfortunately.
Here's a review of how the voting process works, folks.
-If you want to vote for Matt Birk, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Matt Birk"
-If you want to vote for Fred Cox, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Fred Cox"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments. Remember. . .only recs count, so make sure that's how you register your vote.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next two match-ups will be posted.
Have at it, everybody!
