We continue moving forward in our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament, ladies and gentlemen. In this match-up, a guy that was often the smallest (and the toughest) man on the field takes on a quarterback that gave the Minnesota Vikings a couple of solid seasons at the end of his career.
Alma Mater: THE. . .dramatic pause. . .Ohio State University
Acquired by Vikings: Signed as free agent prior to 2004 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 9 (2004-2012)
One of my earliest internet memories as a Vikings fan was tracking the saga of the signing of Antoine Winfield. He was all but delivered to the New York Jets until Red McCombs' private jet swooped in, brought him to Minnesota, and allowed Mike Tice and company to convince him to sign. A huge fan favorite with the Vikings because of his toughness and his tackling ability, he also recorded 21 interceptions for the Vikings. He was a three-time Pro Bowler, and was a first-team All-Pro in 2008.
Alma Mater: University of Washington
Acquired by Vikings: Trade with Houston Oilers prior to 1994 season
Seasons in Minnesota: 3 (1994-1996)
Moon was brought in on the tail end of his career for a Vikings team that was looking for some sort of stability at the quarterback position. He threw for over 4,200 yards in his first two seasons with the Vikings, and his best season game in 1995 when he had 33 touchdown passes to just 14 interceptions. A broken collarbone ended his 1996 season prematurely, and the team released him when he refused to take a pay cut to remain as the back-up to Brad Johnson. Overall, Moon passed for just a shade over 10,000 yards in his three seasons in purple, and made the Pro Bowl in both 1994 and 1995.
Here's a review of how the voting process works, folks.
-If you want to vote for Antoine Winfield, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Antoine Winfield"
-If you want to vote for Warren Moon, rec the comment that says, "Vote - Warren Moon"
Don't rec both comments. . .we're on the honor system here, folks. Although I don't know why you'd rec both anyway. . .you'd end up just canceling yourself out.
Please do not reply to either of the top two comments. . .if you want to debate or make your case or what have you, feel free to do so underneath those top two comments. Remember. . .only recs count, so make sure that's how you register your vote.
The voting will remain open until 8 AM Central time tomorrow, at which point the next two match-ups will be posted.
Have at it, everybody!
