Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament: (2) Alan Page vs (3) Randall McDaniel

Just two more matches to go until we complete the Elite 8 of our Greatest Viking Of All Time Tournament, folks! We've got another good one for you today, as two guys that made their living in the trenches square off one-on-one for the right to take on Fran Tarkenton in the Elite 8.

Alan Page

Alma Mater: University of Notre Dame
Acquired by Vikings: Round 1, 1967 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 12 (1967-1978)
Position: Defensive Tackle
How He Got Here: Defeated Tony Dungy 162-6 in Round 1; Defeated Mick Tingelhoff 166-10 in Round 2

The rock of the famed Purple People Eaters and one of the best defensive tackles in the history of the National Football League, Alan Page is truly a legend. His biggest on-field accomplishment probably came in the 1971 season, when he became the first defensive player to be named the NFL's Most Valuable Player. He was a six-time All-Pro, and unofficially amassed 108.5 sacks as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. His #88 is one of only six to be retired by the team, and he is a member of the Minnesota Vikings' Ring of Honor.

Randall McDaniel

Alma Mater: Arizona State University
Acquired by Vikings: Round 1, 1988 NFL Draft
Seasons in Minnesota: 12 (1988-1999)
Position: Guard
How He Got Here: Defeated Fuad Reveiz 190-4 in Round 1; Defeated Ron Yary 102-80 in Round 2

McDaniel's resume pretty much speaks for itself. He started from Day 1 after being drafted by the Vikings, and was named to the Pro Bowl every single year he was a Viking. He was also a first-team All-Pro every year from 1990 to 1998. He was a member of the National Football League's all-decade team for the 1990s, a member of the Minnesota Vikings' Ring of Honor, and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009. If there have been guards in the history of the National Football League better than Randall McDaniel, you could probably count them on one hand. . .and still have fingers left over.
