Things got off to a bit of a rough start for the Vikings in this one, as the Detroit Lions moved the ball downfield with relative ease. They got down to the Minnesota 24-yard line, and had to settle for a field goal attempt. Rookie holder Sam Martin dropped the snap on the 31-yard attempt, and the Vikings stopped the Lions on that drive.
Then, on the Vikings' first play from scrimmage, Adrian Peterson took a handoff from Christian Ponder and rumbled 78 yards for a touchdown. This confirms that, yes, despite not carrying the ball at all in pre-season action, Adrian Peterson is still pretty darn good at football.
The Lions got on the board on a David Akers field goal on the ensuing drive, a drive that featured what appeared to be a 20-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson, but after review, the officials said that Johnson did not "complete the process," so the play was overturned.
Minnesota followed that up with a three-and-out, and the Lions took over in Minnesota territory after Jeff Locke's punt. As we start the second quarter, the Lions are in Minnesota territory again, looking at fourth and 1 from the Minnesota 14-yard line.
