Coming across the Twitter a little while ago was this tidbit from ESPN's Adam Schefter:
Vikings scheduled to interview Browns DC Ray Horton for their HC job. Minnesota kicks off its HC interviews Darrell Bevell and Dan Quinn.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 3, 2014
With the interviews of Bevell and Horton, the Vikings now have four interviews scheduled. They will also interview Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. I'm not 100% sure on the dates for the interviews, but the team would have to interview Quinn and Bevell by Sunday, as that's the deadline for coaches whose teams are on their bye week for the post-season. According to Pro Football Talk, Horton will interview on Tuesday.
Everyone in Minnesota is familiar with Bevell. He served as offensive coordinator for the Vikings under Brad Childress from 2006 to 2010, as well as the first six games of the Leslie Frazier era. Prior to that, he was the quarterback coach in Green Bay. It might be interesting if he wanted to come back to Minnesota, but I don't know if interesting = good, in this case.
Horton was the defensive coordinator in Cleveland this past season, and the Vikings got an up-close look at his handiwork this past September, as the Browns came in and defeated the Vikings 31-27. The Browns sacked Christian Ponder six times that afternoon. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator in Arizona, and was considered for the head coaching position there, but was passed over for Bruce Arians, leading to his departure for Cleveland.
We're starting to get some more names on the Vikings' list of potential head coaches. Be sure to keep an eye on Arif's head coaching candidate primer for more information on these candidates and many others.
