Report: Redskins To Start Robert Griffin III On Sunday

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

In a rare twist, it's the Minnesota Vikings' opponents that have a bit of a quarterback quandary, and they may be exacerbating it going into this Sunday's contest.

(Puts "Word of the Day" calendar back off to the side.)

Numerous reports online, citing information from reporter Dianna Marie Russini, are saying that the Washington Redskins are planning on starting Robert Griffin III at quarterback this Sunday when the Redskins and Vikings face off at TCF Bank Stadium.

Griffin has not seen the field since Week 2, when he was injured in the Redskins' 41-10 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He threw only three passes in that Week 2 game, and in the Redskins' season opener (a 17-6 loss to the Houston Texans), he completed 29 of 37 passes for 267 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions.

The move. . .if it is the way the Redskins choose to go. . .is a bit of a surprise in light of the performance that Colt McCoy put together on Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. McCoy, who started the season third on the Redskins' depth chart, completed 25-of-30 passes for 299 yards and an interception in Washington's 20-17 overtime victory. It's also surprising in the sense that, like the Vikings, the Redskins are going on their bye next week, and it's a little surprising that the Redskins wouldn't give him that extra week off and ensure he's good to go after the bye.

Griffin has faced the Vikings twice in his career. The first came back in his rookie season of 2012 at FedEx Field. He completed 17-of-22 passes for 182 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also carried 13 times for 138 yards and a huge touchdown run to put the game away for the Redskins, who won 38-26. The second time was in last year's 34-27 Minnesota victory at the Metrodome, a game that saw Griffin complete 24-of-37 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. McCoy, on the other hand, has never faced the Vikings in his career.

Again, reports are surfacing that the Washington Redskins will be starting Robert Griffin III against the Vikings on Sunday afternoon. Nothing official yet, but that's what we've got for you at the present time.
