Which College Players Are Future Vikings Week 6 Review and Week 7 Primer

New, comments

What a fantastic week of college football! If you did not enjoy that or do not follow college football then there are no words. It was the upsets on HGH no? First, Oregon falls to Arizona. Then BYU loses it's star QB to a terrible injury and then the game to Utah State. Once Saturday started the upsets were on. Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, and Wisconsin all fell victim. Wow! If you missed this past weekend of college football then that is a shame.

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

There really were some outstanding performances this week especially as it relates to the Vikings ...

The top performers this week were ...

Connor Halliday QB Washington State rSr 6-4 198 completed 49 of 70 for passes 734 yards and 6 TDs with 0 INTs
Jared Goff QB California 6-4 198 completed 37 of 53 for passes 527 yards and 5 TDs with 0 INTs
Mike Bercovici Arizona State 6-1 203 completed 27 of 45 for passes 510 yards and 5 TDs with 0 INTs
Shane Carden QB East Carolina Sr 6-2 221 completed 31 of 41 for passes 410 yards and 4 TDs with 0 INTs

*Melvin Gordon RB Wisconsin rJr 6-1 207 had 27 carries for 259 yards and 3 TDs
*Mike Davis RB South Carolina Jr 5-9 216 had 23 carries for 183 yards and 3 TDs
*Todd Gurley RB Georgia Jr 6-1 232 had 25 carries for 163 yards and 2 TDs

*Jaelen Strong WR Arizona State rJr 6-4 212 had 10 catches for 202 yards and 3 TDs
Vince Mayle WR Washington State rSr 6-3 219 had 11 catches for 263 yards and 1 TD
Titus Davis WR Central Michigan Sr 6-2 190 had 10 catches for 181 yards and 2 TDs
Kevin White WR West Virginia Sr 6-3 209 had 6 catches for 132 yards and 1 TD

The player of the week should be Connor Halliday. Throwing for 734 yards is incredible. Melvin Gordon is also hard to pass after running for 259 yards. Jaelen Strong was very impressive vs the Trojans too. It really is a tough call.

But I am going to go with Dak Prescott QB Mississippi State who completed 20 of 26 for passes 268 yards and 2 TDs with 0 INTs. He also had 23 carries for 77 yards and 3 TDs in their victory over Texas A&M.

Here is a list of some of the top players and their stats at each position.

I am sure there are other games that a lot of people will be watching. Feel free to give a shout out to those teams and list any other players you like.

Here is a mock with the Vikings picking at #11.

1.11 *Melvin Gordon RB Wisconsin rJr 6-1 207
2.43 *Jaelen Strong WR Arizona State rJr 6-4 212
3.75 Anthony Harris SS Virginia Sr 6-1 190
4.107 Tony Washington OLB Oregon rSr 6-3 250
5.139 Josh Shaw CB Southern California rSr 6-1 200
6.171 Shane Carden QB East Carolina Sr 6-2 221
7.203 Nate Orchard DE Utah Sr 6-4 255

It is increasingly harder to resist Gordon.  Strong really played well against my Trojans much to my chagrin and probably is not getting out of the first round.  But today he is.  :)

I did not address the offensive line because I do not think it is as big of a problem as others.  They have Loadholt, Sullivan, and Fusco all locked up.  They will extend Kalil too.  They drafted Yankey and brought in Ducasse.  I think they want one of them to win the left guard spot eventually.  Thay also took a shot on Tiny Richardson and have Wentworth developing too.  No, I do not see Spielman going for any offensive linemen early next year.

Here are an additional two mocks using the Fanspeak On the Clock premium draft site http://fanspeak.com/ontheclock/premium/draft.php ...

They had the Vikings selecting 7th.

1.7 to the Falcons for 1.12 & 2.12
1.12 to the Dolphins for 1.18 & 3.18
4.7 to the Chiefs for 4.15 & 6.15

18 - R1 P18 DE SHAWN OAKMAN BAYLOR
39 - R2 P7 RB MELVIN GORDON WISCONSIN
44 - R2 P12 OLB BENARDRICK MCKINNEY MISSISSIPPI STATE
71 - R3 P7 DT DANNY SHELTON WASHINGTON
82 - R3 P18 WR DEVANTE PARKER LOUISVILLE
111 - R4 P15 CB JOSH SHAW USC
135 - R5 P7 RB DUKE JOHNSON MIAMI
167 - R6 P7 CB BYRON JONES CONNECTICUT
175 - R6 P15 WR TYLER LOCKETT KANSAS STATE
199 - R7 P7 QB SHANE CARDEN EAST CAROLINA

I like Oakman and McKinney and am afraid they will end up in a lot of mocks as we continue on this year.  Shelton is playing well this year and you can never have enough defensive linemen IMHO.

Shaw is a player who really hurt himself with his bogus story and is likely to fall in the draft.  But he was considered a 2nd round prospect prior to this season.

I like bringing in two backs because they may need them if AP is gone.

Jones is a defensive back that has played safety and may end up there in the NFL.  I believe Zimmer likes his safeties to have corner coverage abiltities which is smart.

1.7 to the Giants for 1.16 & 2.16
1.16 to the Cowboys for 1.21 & 3.21
2.16 to the Patriots for 2.23 & 4.8
4.7 to the Browns for 4.10 & a 2015 5th

21 - R1 P21 WR JAELEN STRONG ARIZONA STATE
39 - R2 P7 RB AMEER ABDULLAH NEBRASKA
55 - R2 P23 TE DEVIN FUNCHESS MICHIGAN
71 - R3 P7 DT ARIK ARMSTEAD OREGON
85 - R3 P21 OLB SHAQ THOMPSON WASHINGTON
104 - R4 P8 QB CONNOR COOK MICHIGAN STATE
106 - R4 P10 WR RASHAD GREENE FLORIDA STATE
135 - R5 P7 CB BYRON JONES CONNECTICUT
167 - R6 P7 DE COREY CRAWFORD CLEMSON
199 - R7 P7 OT JAMON BROWN LOUISVILLE

This is loading up the offense but I think the team will need it soon.  If AP is gone and with Jennings turning 32 next September, this team could have a serious problems in the offensive skill positions.

Well there you have it. Enjoy this week of college football!
