Zimmer: Matt Cassel To Start Next Week Against New Orleans

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

To put it in as polite a manner as one can possibly put it, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel had a fairly rough day on Sunday against the New England Patriots. He threw four interceptions, three of which led to New England points in a 30-7 loss. The chants for rookie Teddy Bridgewater seemed to get louder and louder as the afternoon wore on.

Well, head coach Mike Zimmer put the brakes. . .or attempted to put the brakes. . .on any potential controversy right from the start of his post-game press conference.

It probably shouldn't come as a surprise, as I don't think the Vikings want to potentially throw the rookie to a Rob Ryan defense on the road against a New Orleans Saints team that just fell to 0-2 and is probably going to come out pretty angry. Still, Cassel can't afford to have too many more performances like the one he had today if he expects to keep his starting job for any length of time.

So, as far as Mike Zimmer is concerned, there is no quarterback controversy in Minnesota. Judging from what I heard today, there are approximately 50,000 people or so who would like to disagree.
