As we move forward in the 2014 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings find themselves lining up against another NFC South opponent as they take on the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are coming off of a 56-14 shellacking of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, so the Vikings will have their work cut out for them in attempting to stop that high-flying offense.

To get our coverage of this week's game started, let's take a look at the history between these two teams. As always, these facts and figures are brought to you by the folks from Pro Football Reference.

Total Games Between the Falcons and the Vikings: 27 (25 regular season, 2 post-season)

All-Time Record: Vikings, 16-11 (15-10 Vikings in the regular season, 1-1 in post-season)

Total Vikings Points Scored, Head-to-Head: 639 (23.7 points/game)

Total Falcons Points Scored, Head-to-Head: 468 (17.3 points/game)

Longest Vikings Winning Streak vs Falcons: 4 (twice, most recently from 22 November 1987 - 8 September 1996)

Longest Falcons Winning Streak vs Vikings: 2 (twice, most recently from 21 December 2008 to 27 November 2011)

Most Recent Vikings Victory in Minnesota: 9 September 2007 (Final score 24-3)

Most Recent Falcons Victory in Minnesota: 21 December 2008 (Final score 24-17)

Biggest Vikings Victory in Minnesota: 40 points, 14 September 1968 (Final score 47-7)

Biggest Falcons Victory in Minnesota: 7 points (twice), most recently on 21 December 2008 (Final score 24-17)

A few random facts about this rivalry. . .

-That's not a misprint. The Falcons have never beaten the Vikings in Minnesota by more than a touchdown. The Falcons have made the trip to Minnesota 14 times in their history, and have a record of 4-10, with their victories coming by 7, 6, 3, and 7 points. The Vikings, on the other hand, have home victories of 40 and 38 points over the Falcons. Both of those were a long time ago, though.

-I'd normally have some stats about some of the Vikings players against the Falcons in their careers but. . .well, there really aren't any to report, since guys like Teddy Bridgewater, Cordarrelle Patterson, and the team's stable of running backs haven't played against the Falcons in their careers.

-One guy that has had some success against the Falcons in his career is Greg Jennings. In three career games against the Falcons, he's averaging over 20 yards/catch (13 receptions for 288 yards) and has found the end zone in two of his three regular season games against Atlanta. He also has a 100-yard receiving game against them in the playoffs.

And that's a look at the history of games between the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons. Very much looking forward to working with the folks over at The Falcoholic on this one.
