2015 NFL Mock Draft: New Orleans Saints Select Brandon Scherff

Onward we go to the thirteenth selection in this year's Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, and with it we have virtual GM Austin Blanch and the New Orleans Saints. This is the first of two selections in the first round for New Orleans, as they'll also be selecting down at #31. But, first thing's first, let's see who Mr. Blanch has the Saints taking with this selection.

With the thirteenth pick in the 2015 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints select. . .

Brandon Scherff, offensive tackle, University of Iowa

There's a short explanation from Austin as to why this selection was made, but it's pretty to the point.

Ben Grubbs is 31 and Jahri Evans will be 32 at the start of the season. Scherff has the flexibility to play guard or tackle at the next level and should keep Drew Brees upright while plowing holes in the run game.

(Grubbs was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for a fifth-round pick after Austin had submitted his pick.)

My Thoughts

With the trade of Grubbs to the Chiefs, this pick makes even more sense for New Orleans. Their window is closing pretty rapidly, since Brees isn't getting any younger, and they need to do what they can to keep him upright. As Austin mentioned, Scherff has the flexibility to play either guard (where he'd likely start out for the Saints) or tackle, and they could use the bodies up front at this point. Pretty solid selection, in my opinion.
