We've hit the 19th overall pick in the 2015 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, and it's the second appearance of the first round for the Cleveland Browns. This is the pick they received from the Buffalo Bills in last year's NFL Draft to allow the Bills to move up far enough to draft wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Browns GM Wayne Joseph added a feature back to the Cleveland offense when he selected Todd Gurley at #12, and wants to add even more firepower to the offensive at #19.
With the nineteenth pick in the 2015 Daily Norseman Community Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns select. . .
Maxx Williams, tight end, University of Minnesota
Here is Mr. Joseph's justification for this selection.
In Williams, the Browns address a need that is, unbelievably, potentially more pressing than wide reciever by selecting Maxx Williams out of Minnesota. With incredible depth of the WR class and the shallowness in availability of Tight Ends, Cleveland seamlessly replaces the recently departed Jordan Cameron with the athleticlly gifted and clear cut best Tight End available. With the addition of Williams, not only will the Browns have a big bodied target for Josh McCown between the numbers, but Williams is a sturdy run blocker coming out of a run-first Golden Gopher offense, and will be able to effectively block at the line of scrimmage as well as helping out in the second level running in front of Cleveland's first pick, Todd Gurley.
My Thoughts
Truth be told, I think I sort of ruined the Browns' draft plans in this scenario when I snagged Dorial Green-Beckham for the Kansas City Chiefs with the pick before this one. However, after dealing with the Josh Gordon fiasco, I'm not sure if the Browns would be too keen on taking another wide receiver with off-field issues. As this is a deep wide receiver draft, the Browns decide to go another direction and take the big tight end out of Minnesota. Williams has outstanding hands. . .witness what he had to deal with at the quarterback position. . .and is clearly the top tight end in this year's draft class. He compares quite favorably to a young Jason Witten at this stage, though obviously it remains to be seen whether or not he carves out the same sort of career. As a bit of a Gopher homer, I like the selection, even though I don't think there's any chance that Williams goes this high in the real draft.
What do you think of this selection, folks?
