The first practice of Training Camp for the Minnesota Vikings is in the books, as the team completed their first walk-through a short time ago. The team has a practice coming at 2:45 PM, but it doesn't sound as though the media is going to be allowed at that practice, so this might be all we get for today.
One of the stories that I found surprising was that a guy I thought might have been the leader for the starting right guard spot is, now, no longer in the running for the job at all.
Zimmer said the #Vikings plan to keep T.J. Clemmings at tackle after trying him out at guard during OTAs/minicamp.— Master Tesfatsion (@MasterStrib) July 26, 2015
Zimmer said Mike Harris, Joe Berger, David Yankey and Tyrus Thompson are all in the mix at right guard. Harris is in pole position now.— Matt Vensel (@mattvensel) July 26, 2015
The majority of snaps for the first team at right guard went to Mike Harris. Mike Zimmer was quoted as saying that "weren't ready to stick a rookie in" at that spot, which might not bode terribly well for Tyrus Thompson, either. Then again, Thompson's name was mentioned as being in the mix, so who knows. In any event, the T.J. Clemmings to guard experiment is over. . .for now.
The team placed defensive tackle Shamar Stephen on the Non-Football Injury List, but it apparently isn't anything serious.
Mike Zimmer said Shamar Stephen got a massage and it swelled up on an airplane. He'll only be out about three days.— Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) July 26, 2015
No word on receiver DaVaris Daniels, who was also placed on the NFI list this morning.
During practice, rather than "How's Teddy look," we got an early look at "How Xavier looks."
Xavier Rhodes picked off two passes already. Mike Wallace jokes "You're supposed to let me catch it in walkthrough!" #Vikings— Master Tesfatsion (@MasterStrib) July 26, 2015
A couple of depth chart updates courtesy of Arif. Neither of these should really surprise anyone, to be honest.
Offense begins with 11 package, mossy common package used last year. Johnson-Wallace-Wright with Rudolph and Peterson— Arif Hasan (@ArifHasanNFL) July 26, 2015
Looks like they're trying out Greenway/Cole/Barr at the moment. Terence Newman starting. McKinnon ahead of Asiata— Arif Hasan (@ArifHasanNFL) July 26, 2015
Captain Munnerlyn was substituting in for Cole in the nickel package to start with, leaving Barr and Greenway as the linebackers.
Your second team linebackers were Brandon Watts, Eric Kendricks, and Gerald Hodges.
Speaking of Barr. . .
Anthony Barr said he was 'just about' 100 percent yesterday, but #Vikings feel he needs to catch up on conditioning. Will be eased back in— Andrew Krammer (@Andrew_Krammer) July 26, 2015
Mike Zimmer has high hopes for a guy the Vikings brought in last season.
Zimmer said free agents are usually better in their second year with a team. One reason he figures Linval Joseph will be real good this year— Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) July 26, 2015
Those are just a few of the things that people saw at the first practice of Minnesota Vikings' Training Camp, folks. If more news becomes available, we'll have it here for you as soon as we can get it posted.
