221 of the picks in the 2016 NFL Draft have been distributed as of today. While we're still waiting for Compensatory picks to be announced. . .don't worry, the Minnesota Vikings won't be getting any of those. . .we can take a look at exactly what selections our favorite football team holds at this point.
Here are all of the selections that the Minnesota Vikings currently possess.
Round | Selection (Overall) | How acquired |
1 | 23 | Own pick |
2 | 54 | Own pick |
3 | 86 | Own pick |
4 | 118* | Own pick |
5 | 148* | Own pick |
6 | 162* | Acquired from San Francisco 49ers in Gerald Hodges trade |
7 | 208* | Acquired from Buffalo Bills in Matt Cassel trade |
7 | 212* | Own pick |
The Vikings sent their own sixth-round pick, which is currently #180 overall, to the San Diego Chargers in the trade for offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles. All of the selections with the *s after them are picks that will be lower once Compensatory picks are distributed. The Vikings are set to have the 23rd pick in each round, and they will not have to rotate with other teams at that position.
The reason that there have been 221 picks distributed already rather than 224 is because there are actually three picks being forfeited this year. Everyone knows about the New England Patriots are losing their first round pick because of the football deflating incident from last season. In addition, the Atlanta Falcons are losing their fifth-round pick after being found to have piped crowd noise into the Georgia Dome, and the Los Angeles Rams are losing their fifth-round pick after their selection of offensive lineman Isaiah Battle in this past year's Supplemental Draft. I have not seen any word on whether or not there will be additional Compensatory selections distributed with those three picks being forfeited, but I don't think that would be the case.
(Don't worry. . .the Vikings still won't be getting any of those.)
Rick Spielman has said on more than one occasion that he likes to have ten picks to use on draft day. As things stand right now, he has eight. With the Vikings having built themselves up the way they have so far, I don't think there's enough room on the roster for eight or nine rookies to make the team again, but I'm sure that Spielman will do what he needs to do to put this team in the best possible position to win.
