In what is becoming a near weekly occurrence, the Minnesota Vikings have once again rotated their practice squad. These three players have been added:

  • Austin Shepherd, OL
  • Sterling Bailey, DE
  • Cedric Thompson, S

Shepherd is a familiar name to Vikings fans, as he has drafted in the seventh round of last year’s draft. He was released in August and has since spent time on the practice squads of both the Chargers and Steelers over the past six weeks. Bailey is a defensive end out of Georgia that was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Colts but was waived last month. Thompson is a University of Minnesota alum that was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. He was signed to the New England Patriots on a futures contract in January but was released by the team in August.

To make room for the new signees, these three were released from the Vikings practice squad:

  • Joel Stave, QB
  • Kyle Carter, TE
  • Brian Leonhardt, TE

If one would want to wildly speculate about these moves, perhaps you could draw the conclusion that Stave’s exit means the team felt good enough about Taylor Heinicke’s recovery to jettison Stave. On the other side, perhaps bringing Shepherd back means that the team is desperate to find anything that works on the offensive line.

These moves will likely have little impact on the the product on the field for the rest of the Vikings season, but they are moves to report nonetheless. There will likely be more practice squad re-shuffling in the weeks to come.
