As reported earlier today, the Minnesota Vikings have signed former San Francisco 49ers guard Alex Boone. This should excite Vikings fans.
Offensive line was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, need for the Vikings as the new league year began on Wednesday. Injuries ravaged the Vikings offensive line and poor play from most of the remaining starters resulted in Teddy Bridgewater running for his life for much of the season. Bringing in a guard that started 59 of 64 games over the past four seasons certainly couldn't hurt. Niners Nation told us about how well Boone performed during his time in San Francisco and there's a lot to like. Boone should be in the starting mix and at the very least provide some much-needed depth and versatility.
Of course Boone's success in Minnesota isn't exactly guaranteed either. After performing very well at right guard for three seasons, Boone primarily played left guard last year. As a result of the change in position and scheme (the Niners switched from power to more zone blocking last year) he struggled--let's call it coming down with a bit of Fuscoitis. Boone was the 38th ranked guard last season, just six spots ahead of Brandon Fusco.
If you aren't exactly sold on Boone yet, allow me to help get you fired up about the Vikings' newest guard. First, he's a bit of a crazy person. Case in point, this gif of Boone headbutting a very surprised Colin Kaepernick:
That is outstanding. Just look at Kaepernick's eyes. Equal parts respect and fear. Just the kind of guy you want in the trenches.
Still not convinced? Then take a look at this NFL.com article from 2013 after the 49ers defeated the Green Bay Packers to start the season.
Yes, you read that title correctly:
Alex Boone: I'd like to punch Clay Matthews in the face
As the ancient proverb goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. And anyone that wants to punch Clay Matthews in the face is A-OK in my book.
Welcome to the team, Alex. I think you'll get along just fine in Minnesota.
