Taylor Heinicke Likely Out 2-3 Months, Situation Officially Weird

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

We mentioned earlier that Minnesota Vikings' third-string quarterback Taylor Heinicke showed up to Mankato with his left leg in a cast, something that nobody had heard anything about until players reported to camp on Thursday. We weren't sure exactly what had happened, but thanks to ESPN's Ben Goessling, now we know.

And it's weird.

It turns out that Heinicke was attempting to help a friend break into his own apartment following a trip to the movies earlier this month. Apparently Heinicke attempted to kick the door open and put his foot through the glass pane on the door instead, severing a tendon in his foot. There wasn't any foul play or substance abuse involved, so at least Heinicke has that going for him. . .which is nice.

Heinicke is likely going to find his way onto the Physically Unable to Perform list to start camp, and we'll go over all of the rules that involves in a future post. This means that, for now, Shaun Hill's spot as Teddy Bridgewater's backup appears to be secure, and that undrafted free agent Joel Stave is the Vikings' #3 quarterback. Perhaps the Vikings will sign someone else to compete with Stave for the right to hold the clipboard until Heinicke returns, but that's where things stand for now.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go get some copies of my house keys made.
