Niners To Interview George Paton For General Manager Position

New, comments

Paton, who has turned down numerous interviews in the past, has accepted this one.

George Paton
Yeah, this is still the only picture we have of George Paton.

As part of the group of teams that got an early start on “Black Monday” in the National Football League, the San Francisco 49ers cut ties with both their Head Coach and their General Manager. Their search for a replacement for one of those jobs has taken them to Minnesota.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today, among others, has reported that the Niners will be interviewing Vikings’ Assistant General Manager George Paton for their GM vacancy.

Paton was a finalist for the General Manager’s job with the St. Louis Rams back in 2012, and has turned down overtures from numerous teams since then, including the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins, and the Chicago Bears.

The fact that Paton has chosen to accept this interview with the Niners, then, would appear to be a significant development. The Niners, on the heels of a 2-14 season, appear to be in full-on “scorched earth” mode, and perhaps a complete rebuild like this one is the sort of thing that appeals to Paton.

There really isn’t a lot of information available publicly about Paton (other than the interview requests he’s received over the past few seasons), so there really isn’t much that can be said about him. The fact that his name seems to come up for these sorts of vacancies every offseason obviously means that he’s garnered a bit of a reputation for himself in league circles. Hopefully the Vikings have a plan in place for his successor if he decides to pack his bags for the West Coast.
