When it comes to Vikings, there are none more famous than Leif Erikson. Not even Fran Tarkenton or Alan Page are as well known throughout the world as Leif Erikson is. Each year, 9 October is celebrated as Leif Erikson Day, and the Minnesota Vikings seem to have some sort of a connection with their namesakes.
According to Eric L. Smith of the Vikings’ official website, counting tonight’s 20-17 victory over the Chicago Bears, the Vikings have taken the field eight times on Leif Erikson Day. Their record in those games?
8-0
Surprisingly enough, this is just the second time that the Vikings have played on the road on Leif Erikson Day. (Maybe one of the few breaks the NFL gives this franchise, if you ask me.) Their only other road win on 9 October in team history came way back in 1983 against. . .the Chicago Bears.
Be sure to check out Eric Smith’s article for all the Vikings’ triumphs on Leif Erikson Day in team history. It was something that I didn’t know before this evening, but it’s still a pretty fun little factoid.
