Well, the first round of the draft certainly defied all expectation- who would have thought some many teams would have spent so much to move up for QBs in a generally-regarded-as-weak QB draft class. I expected four QBs to go in the first round, despite none of them really being first-round talent if you ask me, but spending so much to trade up for them- and taking them so high? Wow.
Anyway, all the GMs and their staffs have had all night and all day to digest what just happened, and contemplate their strategy for Day 2, which could see more trades as teams jostle to pick up perceived first-round talent that dropped, and who knows- maybe another trade-up for a QB or two.
Our old friends east of the border start off the evening, as they traded back with Cleveland last night for their #33 pick, and their first-pick of Day 3 as well, both of which are coveted by some GMs (I know Spielman likes picking first in a round), perhaps because you get more trade offers (the Packers reportedly have a few for their first pick tonight) and you get first-shot at guys that unexpectedly dropped from the previous day. Seattle, as per usual, traded back into the 2nd round as well, and are the kings of Day 2 with a total of six picks tonight. That’s right- six- included the 2nd pick of the night. Don’t be surprised if Seattle is pretty active tonight.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arizona potentially move up to get DeShone Kizer.
Not sure if the Packers will stay or trade, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they picked a CB if they stay at #33 (or maybe even if they trade back). But I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if there is a run on defensive backs early in the 2nd round tonight ahead of the Vikings pick. Here are my expectations:
Green Bay: Dalvin Cook (if they stay)
Seattle: Obi Melifonwu - also could go DT or even Davis Webb
Jacksonville: Cam Robinson (if they don’t trade down)
Chicago: Jourdan Lewis
LA Rams: Forrest Lamp
LA Chargers: Jordan Willis
NY Jets: Davis Webb (if available) or Dion Dawkins
Carolina: Teez Tabor
Cincinnati: Joe Mixon
New Orleans: Tim Williams
Philadelphia: Chidobe Awuzie
Buffalo: Dede Westbrook
Arizona: DeShone Kizer (may trade up to get him)
Indianapolis: Ahkello Witherspoon
Baltimore: Zach Cunningham
Minnesota: Alvin Kamara
Washington: Malik McDowell
Tampa Bay: Curtis Samuel
Denver: Caleb Brantley
Cleveland: Kevin King
Detroit: Chris Wormley
Miami: Dan Feeney
NY Giants: Taylor Moton
Oakland: Raekwon McMillan
Houston: Justin Evans
Seattle: Dalvin Tomlinson
Kansas City: Carl Lawson
Dallas: Cordrea Tankersley
Green Bay: Quincy Wilson
Pittsburgh: Tanoh Kpassagnon
Atlanta: Budda Baker
Carolina: Chris Godwin
The picks I made here are based on team needs, players each team have expressed interest, and who’s available to them. Obviously there could be some trades, as other teams may covet a player enough to pay to move up, but hard to guess at which teams that will be.
Round 3 will be harder to predict, as we don’t know how Round 2 will unfold, so I’ll leave that for now. In any case, it should be fun to see how Day 2 unfolds, particularly as the Vikings have some picks!
