Minnesota Vikings By The Numbers: #92

Another number without a lot of fanfare

Another day, another number in our trip through Minnesota Vikings history as we move on to the #92. I’ve gotta be honest. . .I thought yesterday’s poll was going to be a lot closer than it was, but John Randle basically stomped Kevin Williams. Maybe I’ll just stick to the “if you’re in the Hall of Fame, it’s yours” thing I was going to do originally.

I just spent an extra paragraph talking about the #93 because. . .well, there’s not a heck of a lot to talk about when it comes to the #92. Let’s take a brief look at the history of the number in purple.

Prior to 1992. . .strangely enough. . .the #92 had only been worn for one season in Vikings’ history, and that was by someone named Kelly Quinn who appears to have been one of the “scabs” from the 1987 strike. The first Vikings’ player to wear the number for any length of time was defensive end Roy Barker, who wore it from 1992 to 1995. A fourth-round pick of the Vikings in 1992, Barker’s career was sort of nondescript. After not playing a whole lot as a rookie, Barker started 47 of the Vikings’ 48 games from 1993 to 1995, collecting 12.5 sacks. He then moved on to the San Francisco 49ers, where he had 12.5 sacks in 1996 alone.

The number 92 was then worn by former first round pick Duane Clemons, who played for the team from 1996 to 1999. Clemons didn’t do much to live up to his first-round billing, though he did collect nine sacks in his final season with the team before moving on to Kansas City. The number is currently worn by defensive tackle Tom Johnson, who had played pretty much everywhere before coming to the Vikings in 2014 and establishing himself as a pretty solid pass rusher as part of the Vikings’ rotation.

Those are really all of the notable #92s in team history.

Vikings that have worn the number 92:

  • Kelly Quinn (1987)
  • Roy Barker (1992 - 1995, 2000)
  • Duane Clemons (1996 - 1999)
  • Fernando Smith (2000)
  • Winfield Garnett (2001)
  • Jayme Mitchell (2006 - 2009)
  • Remi Ayodele (2011)
  • George Johnson (2012)
  • Justin Trattou (2013)
  • Tom Johnson (2014 - present)

So, whatever debate there might be on this one, have at it, folks!
