Minnesota Vikings By The Numbers: #15

Few have worn the number. Fewer have had an impact.

As with most of the numbers you find in the teens and single digits, not many players in the history of the Minnesota Vikings have ever worn the number 15. In fact, we have only six. Of those six, only two of those players have had a really measurable impact on the team during their time in purple.

The first, chronologically, is quarterback Gary Cuozzo. Cuozzo was a seasoned veteran by the time he came to Minnesota, having spent four years with the Baltimore Colts and a year with the New Orleans Saints before being traded to the Vikings. He served as the backup to Joe Kapp in 1968 and 1969, and became the starter in 1970 after Kapp held out (and was subsequently traded). Despite Cuozzo not having a great season. . .he completed less than half his passes and threw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (7), the Vikings posted the best record in the NFL that season, going 12-2 (including 10-2 in games started by Cuozzo). He went back to being the backup in 1971 after the Vikings re-acquired Fran Tarkenton, and was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1972 for receiver John Gilliam.

The other #15 to take a look at is receiver Greg Jennings. Jennings was another player that took the Green Bay-to-Minnesota route, signing with the team prior to the 2013 season. He led the Vikings in receiving yardage in both of his seasons in purple, but was released before the start of the 2015 season. He had a total of 127 catches for 1,546 yards and 10 touchdowns in his two years in Minnesota, and went on to play one more season for the Miami Dolphins before retiring from the league. You can probably still find him at the Mall of America on any given afternoon.

Vikings that have worn the number 15:

  • John McCormick (1962)
  • Ron Vander Kelen (1964 - 1967)
  • Gary Cuozzo (1968 - 1971)
  • Martin Nance (2006)
  • Greg Jennings (2013 - 2014)
  • Isaac Fruechte (2016 - present)

That’s it for the number 15, ladies and gentlemen. Tomorrow we look at the number 14, and I can already hear the heartbreak about the poll options from here.
